Combining ability of biomass sorghum in different crop years and sites for bioenergy generation

Abstract: Biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is considered as a raw material of great potential for bioenergy generation. The objective of this study was to estimate the combining ability of biomass sorghum of A and R lines, carrying the bmr-6 allele, evaluating different crop years and site effect, aiming at the bioenergetic potential for the production of second-generation ethanol. Four male-sterile lines (A), and 10 fertility restorative lines (R) were used, obtaining 40 hybrids bmr and sensitive to the ph… Show more

“…At the same time, this plant has a high photosynthetic efficiency and can form a powerful biomass in a short time. Due to its biological characteristics, it is an alternative source of biofuels and sugar-containing products based on the processing of sugar sorghum stems [3][4][5]. Therefore, the creation of new highly productive varieties and hybrids of sorghum intended for use as an alternative raw material in the production of bioethanol is a promising direction in breeding.…”

“…Biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is a crop with a high potential as a biomass source for bioenergy generation, both for obtaining second generation ethanol (Amaducci et al, 2000;Davila-Gomez et al, 2011;Silva et al, 2018Silva et al, , 2020 and for the energy cogeneration by direct biomass burning (Bennett & Anex, 2009;Zegada-Lizarazu & Monti, 2012).…”

“…Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench is a crop that has high potential to be used for bioenergy generation. The crop has a short cycle (150-180 days), wide adaptability, seed propagation, fully mechanized production, and high productivity, which reaches 150 t/ha of green mass (da Silva et al 2020;Oliveira et al 2019). Other advantages include its tolerance to drought, an established agricultural production system, good aptitude for tropical and temperate regions and its biomass can be used in direct combustion (second-generation bioethanol) to generate energy (Parrella et al 2010).…”
