Combined Paper Centrifugal Chromatographic Separation and SERS Detection for Multicomponent Substances

Abstract: The separation and chemical analysis of mixtures in an emergency situation represent major challenges, especially in remote or poverty-stricken areas. A novel method was developed for the rapid separation and detection of multiple components via paper centrifugal chromatography, which costs as little as $2.26 US. The method was realized based on the combination of portable paper centrifugal chromatography and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. This coupled technique was successfully implemente… Show more

“…For practical applications, multianalyte detection capabilities are very necessary, yet this is exactly the shortcoming of the current Raman spectroscopy detection technology. Although considerable efforts have been invested, , the simultaneous detection of multiple components is still a big challenge. To this end, we use these multilayer Re nanosheets to build a SERS platform that integrates component separation and detection.…”

“…In later studies, our laboratory also built a 3D-printed version, called the 3D-Fuge, to expand the sample capacity from 10 μL to 2 mL . Other groups across the world have also built on these principles for new design approaches and applications. Through the frugal science approach, an ancient childhood toy was transformed to a powerful tool for synthetic biology and medical diagnostics.…”

“…This innovative technology has gained widespread attention due to its ultra-high sensitivity, rapid, non-destructive detection, and ngerprint information depiction, 21 and has been widely used in food testing, chemical and biological sensors, biomedical monitoring, trace analysis, and electrochemical and catalytic reactions. 22,23 The enhancement of the SERS substrates is mainly attributed to two different theories, namely, electromagnetic enhancement (EM) and chemical enhancement (CM). EM is recognized as a key contribution to SERS enhancement.…”
