In the present study, the quality characteristics of Feta cheese were investigated as a function of the packaging container (a stainless-steel tank (SST), a wooden barrel (WB), and a tin can (TC)) and ripening time. The results showed that the Feta cheese’s pH, moisture, and lactose decreased, while fat, protein, and salt increased (p < 0.05) during ripening with SST and WB, showing similar behaviors versus that of the TC container. For the proteolysis indices, % TN,% WSN, 12% TCA, and 5% PTA showed the highest values (p < 0.05) for cheeses packaged in WB, followed by those in SST and TC, with all increasing (p < 0.05) during ripening. The most abundant odor-active volatiles were free fatty acids, alcohols, and esters following the order SST > WB > TC on day 60. On day 60, the cheeses packaged in SST and WB showed higher (p < 0.05) hardness and fracturability values, as well as aroma scores, compared to those in TC, with both parameter values increasing with the ripening time.

Muscle foods are the main source of high protein and mineral content. However, these foods are highly perishable due to their high moisture content as well as nutritional composition. Generally, microbial changes and oxidative damage occurs during animal slaughter and storage. To avoid this quality deterioration, various chemical additives are widely practiced by the industry. Nevertheless, consumer awareness and government strict regulation on synthetic additives demand clean label foods. The potential of natural bioactive compounds exhibiting strong antioxidant and antimicrobial properties for food preservation is a promising area of research. Recently, the interest in the non-thermal extraction process of bioactive compounds is growing due to their various advantages in extraction yield, stability, and bioactivity of the compound. Besides this, a natural bioactive compound can be applied in combination with other hurdle technologies to enhance the shelf-life of muscle foods. Therefore, this review article emphasizes the current knowledge on the novel non-thermal extraction of bioactive compounds from natural sources and their application as a muscle food preservative. Application of antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds from natural sources alone and in combination with other hurdle technologies has been successfully used for preservation of muscle foods. Additionally, different application methods and their impact on muscle food preservation are suggested.

The cosmetics industry has been forced to search for new active chemicals as a result of increasing customer demand as well as stricter international regulations. Botanical extract offers a source of new active chemicals that is nearly endless and may be used to make cosmetics. Due to their olfactory character in the creation of fragrances and perfumes and the many beneficial properties of their individual components (EOCs), essential oils (EOs) are becoming increasingly popular natural ingredients in the cosmetics and toiletries industry. These properties include anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties (e.g., moisturizers, lotions and cleanser in skin care cosmetics; conditioners, masks or antidandruff products in hair care products; lipsticks, or fragrances in perfumery). It is difficult to generalise the possible applications of essential oils in cosmetics and toiletries because each essential oil has its own unique chemical profile, which is connected with its own particular collection of benefits. Instead, formulators need to make an effort to discover acceptable mixes of essential oils or essential oil compounds in order to get the results they want from the completed goods. This paper presents a detailed examination of the existing research on the usage of essential oils and essential oil compounds (EOs and EOCs) in the cosmetics sector. In addition, we will focus on a few critical topics regarding the safety of essential oils and essential oil compounds used in the cosmetics sector. When formulators of cosmetics are working to perfect products that are based on botanical extracts, they are very likely to find the information offered in this review to be valuable.
