Combination of dietary factors in relation to breast‐cancer occurrence

Abstract: Combinations of dietary factors were studied in relation to breast-cancer occurrence among 133 breast cancer cases and 289 population controls in The Netherlands. Dietary factors were classified according to their possible mechanism of action, i.e., relating either to the intestinal microflora (total fat, fiber, fermented milk products) or to the anti-oxidant hypothesis (beta-carotene, selenium and polyunsaturated fatty acids). From 6 interactions evaluated, the combination of high fiber intake and high intake… Show more

“…Intriguingly, in traditional Ajurvedic medicine, guggul leaf (Commiphora mukul) extract is not only used to decrease cholesterol levels but also has been used to treat cancer (45,46). Moreover, recent epidemiological studies suggest that breast cancer rates are lower in regions with high consumption of low-fat fermented milk or soy products (47,48). Results of other studies suggest that this may be attributable to the effect of Lactobacillus processing bile acids (49,50).…”

“…In fact, a case -control study found a synergistic protective effect of fibre and fermented milk on breast cancer risk. The study concluded that a dietary pattern combining low fat, high fibre and fermented milk might provide substantial protection against breast cancer (van't Veer et al, 1991). Although the extended model was adjusted for these nutrients, residual confounding might remain.…”

“…An early population-based case-control study in the Netherlands suggested that women who consumed relatively high levels of dietary calcium and fiber might have a decreased risk of breast cancer (55). However, this study was relatively small and failed to control for potential confounding factors other than age and fat intake.…”
