This in vitro research verified the possibility of eliminating staining caused by coffee and red wine in five composite resins, after being submitted to thermal cycling. Thirty-six specimens were prepared and immersed in water at 37°C for 24 hours. After polishing, specimen color was measured in a spectrophotometer Cintra 10 UV (Visible Spectrometer, GBC, Braeside, VIC, Australia). All specimens were submitted to thermal cycling at temperatures of 5 and 55°C with a dwell time of 1 minute, for 1,000 cycles in a 75% ethanol/water solution. After thermal cycling, the specimens were immersed in water at 37°C until 7 days had elapsed from the time the specimens were prepared. All specimens were then taken to the spectrophotometer for color measurement. The specimens were divided into three groups (N = 12): distilled water (control), coffee, and red wine. For the staining process to occur on only one surface, all the sides, except one, of the surfaces were isolated with white wax. The specimens were immersed in one of the solutions at 37°C for 14 days. The specimens were dried and taken to the spectrophotometer for color measurement. After this, the specimens were submitted to 20 µm wear three times, and the color was measured after each one of the wear procedures. Calculation of the color difference was made using CIEDE2000 formula. According to the methodology used in this research, it was concluded that the staining caused by coffee and red wine was superficial and one wear of 20 µm was sufficient to remove the discoloration.

Fluorescence properties of commercial composite resin restorative materials in dentistry

The objective was to assess the fluorescence properties of current commercial resin composites. Sixteen light-curing resin composites, representing a total number of 241 shades, were analyzed. Fluorescence measurements of all samples were taken using the monochromator-based fluorescence reader Synergy TM Mx (BioTek Instruments Inc.). Additionally, samples of dentin and enamel were analyzed for comparison. The mean of the maximum excitation wavelength was (398±5) nm and the mean of the resulting emission wavelength was (452±9) nm for all composite shades. The maximum fluorescence varied widely between 50 and 70,808 RFU with a mean of (28,948±15,380) RFU. The maximum for dentin was (9,308±3,676) RFU and enamel (5,467±506) RFU. The results showed that the analyzed composites fluoresced at nearly the same excitation-emission wavelengths combination but with varying optical intensities. These results provide useful reference for optimal fluorescence induction and may help to develop better fluorescence diagnostic methods needed for treatment, forensic investigations and epidemiological research/analyses.

Metamerism phenomenon can be used in illuminant detection to ensure the accuracy of light source. A method based on Long‐, Middle‐, Short‐ wavelength cones(LMS) weighting algorithm to evaluate metamerism degree is proposed. The chromatic relationship between the degree of metamerism mismatch and the light source is studied. Herein, the consistency between the metameric indices (MIs) and CIE1976 L*a*b* color difference ranking is analyzed by SRCC, KRCC, PLCC and RMSE. A statistically sampling method to obtain practical LMS cone fundamentals to evaluate metamerism degree is employed. The analysis results obtained show that the method based on LMS weighting algorithm has good evaluation ability and stability in simulation experiments and statistically sampling experiments, which are in line with visual characteristics of human. Proposed method meets the requirements of selecting metameric pairs used in light source detection. The analysis results have certain guiding significance.
