Colour Doppler examination of early and late orbital haemodynamic changes in eyes with eyelid oedema due to blunt trauma

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Purpose: To evaluate the early and late alterations in orbital blood flow parameters in eyes with severe eyelid swelling due to blunt trauma by using colour Doppler ultrasonography (CDU). Methods: Blood flow parameters in the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs) and central retinal vein (CRV) were examined by CDU in 62 eyes of 31 patients with unilateral blunt trauma and in 32 eyes of 32 normal subjects. Patients were examined within the first … Show more

“…Some authors claim that a distinction between venous and lymphatic vascular malformation is artificial and prefer to treat according to clinical findings (Wright et al 1997). Lymphangiomas are considered as malformations without flow, but combined venous)lymphatic malformations also exist (Harris 1999;Alp et al 2006 Extensive sclerosing using an arterial, venous or direct percutaneous approach bears the risk of sclerosing material migrating to the cavernous sinus, producing massive inflammatory reactions and venous congestion in the orbit. In addition to thrombophlebitis and thromboembolism, complications include optic nerve injury, scarring, haemorrhage, and urticaria to severe anaphylaxis (Arat et al 2004).…”

“…Increased PSV and EDV in the OA have been also described after eyelid oedema resulting from blunt trauma. This effect was presumed to be a consequence of trauma‐induced hyperaemia in the orbital soft tissues (Alp et al. 2006).…”
