Colorado potato beetle [ Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say)] resistance to organophosphates and carbamates in Serbia

Abstract: Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), the Colorado potato beetle (potato beetle), is the most destructive potato pest in Serbia. Up to four pesticide treatments are necessary for its control. Insecticide resistance of the potato beetle in Serbia is well-investigated and documented, especially to organophosphates and carbamates. Toxicity of chlorpyriphos (organophosphates) and carbosulfan (carbamates) was investigated by topical application, using adults of the first generation from nine field populations. Adults of… Show more

“…particularly damaging (Igrc-Barčić et al, 1999), because the economic threshold is much lower than for the individuals of the second generation (Zehnder et al, 1995). In some countries the intensive use of insecticides against the Colorado potato beetle has led to the appearance of pesticide resistance (Pap et al, 1997;Stanković et al, 2004). With the intention of diminishing or preventing this phenomenon, new strategies of potato production were developed in some regions that proved to be very efficient (Pruszynski & Wegorek, 2004).…”

“…A too intensive use of synthetic insecticides resulted in resistance of this pest in more than one case (Stanković et al, 2004), while the use of environmentally more acceptable substances -though some of them do show considerable efficacy in controlling this insect (Scott et al, 2003) -has not been generally applied in Europe until now. The reason for this situation can be attributed also to the slow mode of action of these substances, as many growers judge the efficacy of a pesticide according to its immediate effect.…”

“…According to several authors (Stanković et al, 2004;Inđić et al, 2006), CPB resistance to carbamates and organophosphates, as well as to pyrethroids (Inđić, 1997;Perić et al, 1997) was registered in a number of populations in Serbia. Literature data indicate that CPB resistance was noted for 42 insecticides, belonging to different chemical groups (organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids).…”
