Color is one of the major remaining contaminants in the palm oil mill effluent (POME) following the conventional treatment of POME. The removal of color from POME using adsorption on activated carbon was investigated. The adsorption experimental design was performed using the standard response surface method (RSM) design that is central composite design to determine the optimum process variables for color removal by using the Design-Expert software (version 7.0. Stat-Ease, trial version). Besides obtaining optimum values, RSM also has the advantage of studying the interaction between various experimental parameters compared to one-factor-at-a-time. The equilibrium experimental data were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The statistical analysis showed that the quadratic model as well as the model terms was significant. The model had very low probability value (0.0003). The R 2 for the model was 0.9184 and the adjusted R 2 was 0.8380. The validation of the model showed experimental value and predicted value of 0.124 and 0.106, respectively. The optimum conditions suggested by the model for the process variable were 87.9 min, 4.05 and 7.86 g, for time, pH and granular activated carbon dose, respectively. The maximum removal obtained at these conditions was 89.95 %. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm compared to Freundlich isotherm with R 2 value of 0.850 for the former and 0.273 for the later.

A hybrid process involving adsorption followed by microfiltration is a less energy-intensive alternative for treatment of textile effluent. Modelling of microfiltration of dye-loaded activated carbon in a tubular module is important for design and scale-up. In this work, a simple kinetic model for cake removal during microfiltration in a tubular module is derived from first principles.. Reactive black dye exhibits the highest flux decline rate among the four different dyes. Cake layer thickness is less than 1 % of the channel diameter for different operating conditions. The mathematical analysis is extended to predict the limiting pressure. Cake removal rate is in the range of 0.01-0.05 Pa À1 Á s À1 for different dyes, lowest for reactive black and highest for reactive brown. The cake is thickest (14 mm) for reactive black, compared to other dyes at 104 kPa and 100 L/h cross-flow rate. Cake resistance of black dye is 1.5 times the membrane hydraulic resistance at a 50 L/h crossflow rate and 104 kPa, and it is the highest among all the dyes analyzed. Simulation shows that steady state permeate flux increases with Reynolds number at higher transmembrane pressure whereas it varies insignificantly at lower pressure. Attainment of steady state is delayed for a lower cake removal constant. For yellow dye, steady state is achieved at 15 min for k r ¼ 0.1 Pa À1 Á s À1 and beyond 1 h for k r ¼ 0.1 Pa À1 Á s À1. Cake compressibility has a stronger influence on limiting transmembrane pressure compared to cake removal rate at higher Reynolds numbers.

RESUMO -O fenol está presente em efluente da indústria do petróleo devendo ser removido antes de seu descarte, sendo o processo adsortivo uma alternativa para essa remoção. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o uso do carvão da palha de coqueiro ativado com CO 2 para remoção de fenol em soluções. A evolução cinética inicial foi rápida até 100 min., atingindo o equilíbrio em 360 min. O modelo pseudo n ordem foi o que melhor se ajustou aos dados experimentais conforme o teste F, para um nível de 95% de confiança. Com base nos modelos de Weber-Morris e Boyd, o processo adsortivo é controlado por mais de uma etapa, incluindo difusão intrapartícula e difusão através do filme. Para o equilíbrio de adsorção o modelo de Fritz-Schlunder apresentou melhor ajuste aos dados experimentais quando comparado, pelo teste F, ao modelo LangmuirFreundlich. A capacidade adsortiva máxima foi de 55,8 ± 6,9 mg.g -1 demostrando ser um potencial adsorvente para tratamento de efluentes contendo fenol.
