“…Stimulation with blue light was associated with increased relaxation, less anxiety and less hostility, while stimu lation with red definitely increased tension and excitement. Since then, Aaronson 50 and Plack and Schick 51 reported similar effects of specific colours on activation and arousal. Finally, Wolfahrt and Sam 52 in 1982 not only confirmed the effects of selected colours on behaviour and physiology, but also corroborated Ehrenwald's finding that blind subjects were as affected as sighted ones.…”

“…These differences are supported by physiological measures (Gerard, 1957;Jacobs & Hustmeyer, 1974;Mikellides, 1990). The induction of color through post-hypnotic suggestion produces behavior effects in accordance with Birren's (1961) continuum of arousing and inhibitory colors (Aaronson, 1971). Effects of inhibitory and arousing colors on work performance must be qualified by the nature of the tasks, particularly on whether physical or mental effort is required (Stone, 2003).…”

“…However, our study design did not allow us to elucidate which particular color images are more effective modulators or stimulators for different subjects. Although color preference seems to change with several variables (Aaronson, 1971), for example, cultural background, personal character, mood, and physical condition, we might expect that colors associated with natural shapes or scenes would be an effective stimulator for Japanese people, given that nature is highly valued in the Japanese culture. To effectively use color images to change a subject’s mood into a more relaxed state and, consequently, to be able to change the attitude to stress acceptance of patients who have been experiencing ongoing stress, we need to carry out further studies to determine which particular color images or types of color images are most likely to be effective with which types of individuals or types of mood or health conditions.…”

“…Birren (1950) found an influence of color on several physical variables, including blood pressure, pulse rate, and breathing rate. Aaronson (1971) and Plack and Shick (1974) found that individuals associate certain colors with specific moods or emotional characteristics.…”
