Currently, historical areas in China are facing issues of color authenticity and excessive commercialization. Colors, as an important element of historical areas, reflect their history and culture. However, there are some flaws in the existing research methods, so a more scientific and systematic method is needed to obtain accurate and objective color visualization results to promote the sustainable development of historical areas. In order to explore the methods and applications of visualizing the environmental color patterns of historical areas, Shiquan Street in Suzhou, China, was taken as the research object; ArcGIS 10.5 was used to obtain the street-view photo samples; Matlab was used to summarize the architectural colors of the historical areas; and K-means clustering was used to generate the central color card of the historical areas, thus completing the color visualization of the historical areas, followed by further searching for the color patterns and central colors, so as to explore the strategies for sustainable development of historical areas. The various quantified color models of historical areas can explore the regional uniqueness and color locality of historical areas, which avoids problems such as homogenization of block colors, unclear styles and features, and an excessive proportion of commercial colors caused by poor color guidance and control in the design related to historical areas, providing approaches to the research on the harmonious unity of environmental colors and features related to historical areas. A color-based research method has been proposed to protect and maintain the original appearance of historical areas. The application of this method provides a new perspective and possibility for the protection of historical areas, allowing these areas to achieve historical sustainability while maintaining their historical characteristics and values.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Ancient Architecture and Lacquer Art

This research investigates the use of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in ancient architecture and lacquer art. The aim is to create accurate and interpretable models to reveal these cultural artefacts’ underlying design principles and techniques. To achieve this, machine learning and data-driven techniques are employed, which provide new insights into their construction and preservation. The study emphasises the importance of transparent and trustworthy AI systems, which can enhance the reliability and credibility of the results. The developed model outperforms CNN-based emotion recognition and random forest models in all four evaluation metrics, achieving an impressive accuracy of 92%. This research demonstrates the potential of XAI to support the study and conservation of ancient architecture and lacquer art, opening up new avenues for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

The North Bund is located in the southern riverside of Hongkou District, Shanghai, characterized by rich historical architecture. The yellows make up a large proportion, followed by the reds and neutrals. The auxiliary and interspersed colors center round the reds, neutrals, followed by the yellows. Dominant and auxiliary colors fall into the category of high and mid‐high brightness and the interspersed colors of low and mid‐low brightness. The color development of the historical buildings on the North Bund can be divided into five periods. Before 1843, the residential buildings centered round light colors like light‐gray and white; the palace and temple architecture were ablaze with red, yellow, green and black. From 1843 to 1985, the Colonial Veranda‐style and classic buildings began to emerge. The dominant and auxiliary colors center round light‐yellow and tangerine with high and mid‐high brightness; and the neutrals make up a large proportion. From 1986 to 1919, Colonial Veranda‐style buildings on the North Bund achieved a dominant position, the dominant colors were light‐yellow, dark‐red and gray blue analogous to the neutrals. The color structure was rather unstable. From 1920 to 1937, decorative and modernist buildings gained in popularity. Red made up a large proportion of the dominant, auxiliary colors and interspersed colors, but the interspersed colors were darker, such as pink and fuchsia. The relatively stable structure has the largest number. From 1938 to 1949, the construction industry proved to be stagnant, and preference was normally given to more neutral colors, having no particular distinguishing features
