Color of bulk‐fill composite resin restorative materials

Abstract: Clinicians should keep in mind that tested composite resins may change color when exposed to water and significantly change color immediately after they are polymerized. In addition, the color change continues over time should the patient is a coffee and/or red wine consumer.

“…The materials' compositions can be said to play a considerable role with regard to color alterations. 20 As manufacturers do not highlight structural properties in detail, FIGURE 1 The color change values of the four resin composites after immersion in the four different solutions at both the 1 week and the 1 month it is hard to assign all of the results to these intrinsic structures. However, there are similar formulas inside the tested materials, which may be related to discoloration.…”

“…23 Many of the resinbased materials, including bulk-fill composites, contain CQ as a photoinitiator, which had been previously connected with discoloration. 20 In Tetric N-Ceram, there are two further additions to CQ, such as Ivocerin, a patented initiator of Ivoclar-Vivadent, and Lucirin TPO, an acylphosphine oxide with a peak absorbance of 385 nm. These initiators have the capacity to cause more free radicals per molecule to unite and can claim to improve light sensitivity.…”

“…1 However, clinicians might encounter difficulties in matching their colors to that of the surrounding dentitions due to the difference in optical properties between the tooth structure and resin composites. 1,2 of bulk-fill composites have higher translucency. 3,4 Nevertheless, this beneficial property could compromise the aesthetics especially in throughand-through class III and IV restoration or in the presence of discolored tooth structures by transmission of the background color.…”
