Bulk-fill composites show structural differences compared to those of conventional resin composites. Their more reactive photoinitiators, monomer compositions, and increased filler content may result in higher color stability than for conventional ones. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the color stability of three different bulk-fill composites and one conventional resin composite with a higher filler load after 1 week and 1 month of immersion in different drinks. The resin composite materials that were tested demonstrated significantly different color changes after immersion in the four solutions during both evaluation periods. Immersion in coffee and red wine showed noticeable staining of all the materials. The discoloration effect of staining solutions on the resin composites depends both on the material composition and on the pigment types found in the solutions. Objectives:To evaluate the color, translucency and masking ability of a newly developed bulkfill resin composite with enhanced opacity. Materials and Methods: A3 shade composite discs (n=20/material) (Filtek bulk-fill; FB andFiltek bulk-fill One; FBOne) were prepared at 2 and 4 mm thickness (n=10/thickness). Three different backgrounds (white tile, black tile, and C4 shade porcelain) and the intrinsic color for each material were used to determine the translucency parameter (between white and black backgrounds), and to simulate oral cavity darkness (between the black background and the intrinsic color of resin composite), and the discolored tooth structure (between C4 shade porcelain and the intrinsic color of resin composite). Additionally, the chroma coordinates were measured for 2 mm thickness on the different backgrounds. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon test as a post hoc for multiple comparisons (p< .05). Results:A clinically perceptible color difference (Δ E* > 1.74) was recorded between FB and FBOne. FBOne showed significantly higher TP values (p< .001) than FB. None of the two materials could mask the oral cavity darkness in a clinically acceptable threshold (ΔE* > 2.7). FBOne showed a clinically acceptable (2 mm, ΔE* < 2.7) and un-perceptible threshold (4 mm, ΔE* < 1.74) for masking the discolored tooth substrate. Conclusions:FBOne is a promising bulk-fill resin composite showing an appropriate masking ability of the discolored tooth structure without interfering with its translucency.

Effect of pediatric drugs on the color stability of dental restorative materials currently used in pediatric dentistry

The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the color stability of esthetic restorative materials after immersion in different pediatric drugs. Three different restorative materials namely composite resin, alkasite and high-viscosity glass ionomer cement(HVGIC) were used to prepare total 96 (32 from each) disc-shaped specimens(2mmx5mm). A spectrophotometer was used to record the color of each sample after sample preparation and 7 days following the staining technique. After 1-week period, ΔE ∗ values were calculated. The average color changes(ΔE) for all drugs/restorative materials ranged from 1.81 to 8.08. The most prominent alteration was found in Cough syrup-Alkasite(8.08 ± 2.62) and the least one was found in Cough syrup-HVGIC(1.81 ± 0.74) pairwise. The color change observed in Cough syrup-Alkasite group was statistically significantly higher than in Cough syrup-HVGIC (p < 0.05). Alkasite showed greater color alteration with all drugs compared to other materials and HVGIC showed better color stability with all drug formulations.

Abstract: Clinicians should keep in mind that tested composite resins may change color when exposed to water and significantly change color immediately after they are polymerized. In addition, the color change continues over time should the patient is a coffee and/or red wine consumer.
