Color conversion for a multi‐primary display using linear interpolation on equi‐luminance plane method (LIQUID)

Abstract: Abstract— A color‐conversion method, which converts an XYZ tristimulus value to a set of display signals for a multi‐primary display, has been developed. It is necessary for a display‐device driver in a color‐management system to select an optimal set of display signals that presents a given colorimetric value on a display screen. A multi‐primary display, which has more than four primaries, has more than two sets of display signals that generate the same colorimetric value theoretically. A display‐device drive… Show more

“…One is the colorimetric color reproduction technique and the other is spectral color reproduction. The former relies on the matrix-switching method proposed by Ajito et al 7) and the LIQUID method 8) proposed by Motomura et al These methods affect the reproduction of color if the observer's color matching function does not match that of the standard observer. The latter type of method involves an optimization based on a Lagrange multiplier 9) proposed by Murakami et al Unlike the colorimetric color reproduction method, the latter method makes it possible to reproduce colors by considering the individual differences of the color matching function.…”

“…To solve this problem, a number of methods have been proposed. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Several methods calculate the intensity values of primary colors so as to improve the performance of the display. For example, they calculate the values to reduce power consumption of the display 15,16 or to improve the viewing angle 17 or resolution.…”

“…Since there exists a degree of freedom; plural combinations of multiprimary color values can reproduce a certain color. To solve this problem, we developed several methods for 3toM color conversion [28][29][30][31] . The computation speed, the easiness of hardware implementation, and the image quality depend on the method of multiprimary color conversion.…”
