Stereoscopic video technology, which enables three-dimensional (3D) images to be displayed, has been developing rapidly. However, existing devices are unable to achieve accurate color reproduction. This paper proposes a method to accurately reproduce the colors displayed by a multiband 3D projector. Previously, we proposed a stereoscopic display system with an expanded color gamut. However, we only confirmed the expansion of the color gamut of the proposed system and were unable to display stereoscopic images with accurate colors. We now propose an accurate color and spectral reproduction method for a stereoscopic image display system for which we developed an expanded color gamut by means of the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES). The system design for optimizing the color reproduction of the multiband 3D projector is described. An experimental evaluation of the color reproducibility showed the performance of the proposed method to be superior to that of an existing method.

Wide gamut LCD using locally dimmable four‐primary‐color LED backlight

This paper proposes a wide gamut LCD using locally dimmable four‐primary‐color (4PC) LED backlight. Although the color gamut of LCDs has been improved in recent years, it is insufficient to reproduce all the colors in the real world. The objective of this paper is to propose a wide gamut LCD that reproduces all the colors in the real world while keeping the cost increases to a minimum. We evaluated the color gamut reproduced by LEDs of multiple primary colors and selected cyan as the optimal color to be added to the three primary colors to reproduce all the colors in the real world. Therefore, we designed an LED backlight consisting of an additional only‐cyan LED with three‐primary‐color LEDs and developed a prototype LCD with 4PC LED backlight. Furthermore, we developed a local dimming algorithm for the 4PC LED backlight. As a result, we confirmed that the prototype LCD with the 4PC LED backlight is able to cover almost all the colors in the real world and also able to display natural images with highly saturated colors by local dimming.

In addition to the great advancement of high-resolution and large-screen imaging technology, the issue of color is now receiving considerable attention as another aspect than the image resolution. It is difficult to reproduce the original color of subject in conventional imaging systems, and that obstructs the applications of visual communication systems in telemedicine, electronic commerce, and digital museum. To breakthrough the limitation of conventional RGB 3-primary systems, "Natural Vision" project aims at an innovative video and still-image communication technology with highfidelity color reproduction capability, based on spectral information. This paper summarizes the results of NV project including the development of multispectral and multiprimary imaging technologies and the experimental investigations on the applications to medicine, digital archives, electronic commerce, and computer graphics.
