Color consistency for digital multi-projector stereo display systems

Abstract: Digital projectors have a significant advantage over CRTs for IPT setups: brightness. But they also have a number of disadvantages, one of which is color consistency. This problem is exacerbated when using the Infitec method for stereo separation, which in itself has some strong advantages for CAVE and tiled wall setups. In this paper we will describe a method for color and brightness correction of multi-projector display systems. The method itself is used in two new projection systems, which are currently und… Show more

“…5,6 The research group at Fraunhofer-IGD developed the HEyeWall, a stereo tiled display, based on Infitec stereo separation. 7 From their work it becomes clear that maintaining a large stereo tiled displays with manually aligned projectors is very time consuming. We present a working stereo tiled display based on back-projection and linear polarization using automatic calibration in the rendering software that minimally impacts the display performance.…”

“…To transform these triangles onto a common triangle, image data need to be processed before they enter the imager (LCD, LCoS or DMD chip) of the digital projector. The algorithm for this color conversion is a customary algorithm for calibrating colors in electronic imaging systems [2].…”

“…In addition to evaluating the loss of quality due to realtime restrictions and the influences of animated scenes instead of static images, such experiments need to determine the influence of restricted resolutions of the display devices. The obvious advantage of BTFs compared to BRDF material representations (i.e., accurate reproduction of small-scale surface structure) will only be visible in applications if high-resolution displays like the HEyeWall [Kresse et al 2003] are employed or if users zoom onto specific regions.…”
