Colonoscopy procedure simulation: virtual reality training based on a real time computational approach

Abstract: BackgroundColonoscopy plays an important role in the clinical screening and management of colorectal cancer. The traditional ‘see one, do one, teach one’ training style for such invasive procedure is resource intensive and ineffective. Given that colonoscopy is difficult, and time-consuming to master, the use of virtual reality simulators to train gastroenterologists in colonoscopy operations offers a promising alternative.MethodsIn this paper, a realistic and real-time interactive simulator for training colon… Show more

“…e continuous updating of technology promotes the continuous updating of the expression forms of the animation industry, making it have unlimited possibilities [4][5][6][7]. In the teaching activities of film and television animation (FTA) major, if VR technology is properly introduced, it will not only play a prominent role in improving the education mode, teaching means, and teaching facilities but also play a significant role in enhancing students' interest in learning, promoting them to explore professional knowledge and skills, and enhancing the professional teaching effect.…”

“…Computer simulation provides a solution for cost-effective generation of videos and ground truths having versatile properties [23] , [34] , [35] . However, most simulation systems for hollow organs like the colon, bronchus and abdominal cavity [36] [39] were designed for virtual display during medical training and thus do not support data synthesis and evaluation for 3D reconstructions.…”

“…Medical training systems using virtual reality (VR) equipment are actively being developed. To date, the development and the usability of VR training systems has been demonstrated in the areas of colonoscopy, psychology, arthroscopy, bronchoscopy, and surgery [ 3 6 ]. A previous study on trainees without previous anatomical knowledge showed that training with a VR anatomical atlas was associated with faster correct answers and a higher acceptance of the learning unit than that for training without the VR anatomical atlas [ 7 ].…”
