“…CRCs provide social support and resources specifically for academics in recovery. CRCs aim to create an environment for students in recovery to experience a sense of belonging and connectedness to others without using drugs or alcohol and to foster successful recovery while interacting with the often substance-saturated college environment (Cleveland, Harris, Baker, Herbert, & Dean, 2007;Harris, Baker, & Cleveland, 2010). Although the prevalence of CRCs has grown, only approximately 600 students participated in such communities in 2013 (Laudet, Harris, Kimball, Winters, & Moberg, 2014).…”

“…Harris, Baker, and Cleveland (2010) provide an excellent overview of some of the strategies observed within the network of Recovery Schools. For example, the Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program for Students at Rutgers, the oldest program of this type, offers designated housing for recovering students, educational and intervention services by certified substance abuse counselors, and 12-step meetings.…”

“…Recognition of this problem has led at least 20 colleges and universities to develop collegiate recovery communities (CRCs) (Smock, Baker, Harris, & D’Sauza, 2011) that provide comprehensive recovery support services. CRCs are largely based on the 12-step program (Harris, Baker, & Cleveland, 2010), which has been shown to be effective in reducing relapse among both adults (Humphreys, Mankowski, Moos, & Finney, 1999) and adolescents (Kelly, Dow, Yeterian, & Kahler, 2010). Only 4% to 8% of CRC members relapse each year (see Smock et al, 2011), providing hope to these vulnerable young adults.…”
