College Students Who Wear Watches: Locus of Control and Motivational Sources

Abstract: 119 undergraduate college students were administered the Rotter I-E Scale and the Motivation Sources Inventory. Scores were compared for a group of 66 students who were wearing watches and 53 students who were not wearing watches. The former had higher scores on External locus of control and higher scores on a measure of Instrumental Motivation as anticipated.

“…Use of the inventory has demonstrated strong relations with influence tactics (Barbuto & Scholl, 1999), transformational behaviors (Barbuto, Fritz, & Marx, 2000), and organizational citizenship behaviors (Brown, Barbuto, Wrlhite, & Wheeler, 2000). Other correlations have also been found in applied research with watch-wearing behaviors (Spencer, 2000) and immigrant students' adjustment (Tsytsarev & Lancsman, 1999). It has also been used to understand followers' compliance (Barbuto, 2000).…”

Two of these studies included a measure of McClelland's three needs (1985), which reported the Motivation Sources Inventory offered better prediction of both transformational behaviors and influence tactics used (Barbuto, et al, 2000(Barbuto, et al, , 2002.…”
