Architectural Design Decisions (ADDs) capture the essence of relevant Architectural Knowledge (AK) and the underpinning rationale in order to produce well-designed software architectures. AK and design rationale might get lost if not captured at the same time when the architecture is discussed and modeled in early design phases. For years, this relevant knowledge has been captured using text templates and supported by a number of research tools. Nevertheless, as no commercial tool is still available combining AK capturing with UML notations to facilitate capturing the design decisions at the same time the architecture is modeled, is the major barrier to convince software architects and companies to invest in documenting the significant design decisions. As capturing AK using text templates requires an extra effort, we propose an approach to make the documentation process easier and reduce the effort thereof by using voice commands. In particular, we suggest an approach to: (i) capture ADDs using voice commands during design conversations, and (ii) link the captured ADDs to UML notations. Our approach integrates OctoUML, a modeling tool with voice commands for capturing design decisions by voice.

Despite the growing demand for professional graphic design knowledge, the tacit nature of design inhibits knowledge sharing. However, there is a limited understanding on the characteristics and instances of tacit knowledge in graphic design. In this work, we build a comprehensive set of tacit knowledge characteristics through a literature review. Through interviews with 10 professional graphic designers, we collected 123 tacit knowledge instances and labeled their characteristics. By qualitatively coding the instances, we identified the prominent elements, actions, and purposes of tacit knowledge. To identify which instances have been addressed the least, we conducted a systematic literature review of prior system support to graphic design. By understanding the reasons for the lack of support on these instances based on their characteristics, we propose design guidelines for capturing and applying tacit knowledge in design tools. This work takes a step towards understanding tacit knowledge, and how this knowledge can be communicated. CCS CONCEPTS• Human-centered computing → Empirical studies in HCI.

This paper describes a novel voice interaction mechanism for capturing and managing design knowledge within a collaborative Computer-Aided Design (CAD) environment. We present a software module for speech recognition that integrates with a CAD application to allow the automatic creation of textual annotations in a 3D model directly from voice data. Audio is transcribed automatically, resulting in a textual note that is searchable and available to other users via a Product Data Management (PDM) system, providing an intuitive mechanism to document modeling processes and design knowledge. The system consists of three functional blocks: (1) audio recording, (2) speech recognition, and (3) query management against a cloud-based service. In this paper, we justify the need for our system from a human-computer interaction standpoint and discuss the rationale of its design and implementation in the context of collaborative design communication. Finally, we discuss some application spaces that demonstrate the capability of voice annotations for capturing knowledge.
