Collagen metabolism in normal and complicated pregnancy: changes in the aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen in serum

Abstract: The turnover of type III collagen, a major constituent of the myometrium and the uterine cervix, during pregnancy was evaluated by monitoring serum antigens related to the aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen. Their concentration increased markedly towards term in most uncomplicated pregnancies, while their size distribution throughout the pregnancy resembled that seen in the sera of normal healthy persons. In some patients, however, the level remained low, indicating interindividual variation in t… Show more

“…However, this assump tion cannot be sustained because the serum PIIIP concentrations in normal pregnant women increase markedly towards term and the levels were less than 50 ng/ml at most [ 13], Another assumption is that PIIIP accu mulates in the fetal circulation owing to the immaturity of the renal function, but has to be dismissed since, as Keller et al [14] have demonstrated, PIIIP elimination does not depend on the renal function.…”

“…Their biochemistry has become increasingly interesting for the study of various diseases. Different formation and de gradation products of collagen metabolism can be de tected and quantified in serum [Hahn, 1984;Risteli and Risteli, 1986;Risteli et al" 1987]. Type III collagen is an ubiquitous structural protein in the interstitial space [Miller and Gay, 1982;Schuppan and Hahn, 1987], The aminoterminal procollagen III peptide (PIIIP) is pre sumed to be cleaved from the procollagen III triple helix during its secretion from cells or when collagen 111 fibrils grow.…”

“…In the diagnosis of early stages of the disease, however, both markers were weak, with up to 50 % of the stage I cancers remaining undetected. PlllNP resembles CA 125 (9,10) in being an unspecific tumour marker in ovarian carcinoma because increased values have been recorded in other gynaecological cancers (7), severe pelvic inflammatory diseases (12), in pregnant patients (13) and in some non-gynaecological malignancies (14).…”
