“…The pattern of reaction occurring in our patient has not, to our knowledge, been previously documented with carbamazepine overdosage, although a bullous skin eruption has been described with imipramine, a chemically related compound, (Freeman and Raza, 1965). A lupus erythematosus-like phenomenon has been described with therapeutic dosage of carbamazepine (Simpson, 1966) and the relationship of therapy to the serological findings in our patient is not clear. However, before the overdose, our patient had taken very few carbamazepine tablets.…”

“…There have been occasional reports of agranUlocytosis, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia and cholestatic jaundice. In a few cases, carbamazepine had been implicated in urticarial rashes, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, lupus erythematosus, exfoliative dermatitis, alopecia, lichenoid eruptions and generalized erythema (1)(2)(3)(4). The patient reported here had experienced 2 episodes of cutaneous reaction with spontaneous recovery on stopping Tegretol and prompt recurrence on resuming it.…”

“…Phenytoin and ethosuximide intake have both been associated with the presence of circulating antinuclear 328 antibodies in occasional patients (Beernink & Miller 1973). Reversible instances of systemic lupus erythematosus have been reported in patients taking phenytoin, primidone, carbamazepine and ethosuximide (Rallison et al 1961;Simpson 1966;Singsen et al 1976). Rarely, phenytoin intake has been associated with the development of a pseudolymphoma syndrome with Hodgkin-like histological features, which resolves on cessation of the drug (Saltzstein & Ackerman 1959).…”
