Collagen and Elastic Content of Abdominal Skin After Surgical Weight Loss

Abstract: (1) Patients displayed lax, soft skin lacking sufficient collagen fiber network. (2) Elastic fiber content was not damaged, and was even moderately increased in epigastrium; (3) Preoperative obesity negatively correlated with hypogastric collagen concentration; (4) Future studies should pinpoint the roles of obesity, and especially of massive weight loss, on dermal architecture and response to surgery.

“…Another study reported that obese mice demonstrate poor wound collagen deposition, which might be due to adipose tissue structural changes [32,35]. A more recent study by Orpheu et al reported that postbariatric patients had a limited collagen network, although elastic fiber content was the similar in obese and non-obese patients [36]. However, there are also reports demonstrating obesity does not alter skin quality [37], but the process of MWL itself creates damage in the extracellular matrix [38].…”

“…In a previous study we documented depletion of collagen, but not of elastic fibers, in the dermis of female bariatric candidates, contributing to the lax skin [7]. Redundant skin folds impair selfstem.…”

“…They also depend on the level of physical activity, lack of use, nutrition status, denervation, and chronic physiological stress. In this field of research, morphological and histochemical methods of analysis have been useful in the study of muscle anatomy and physiology 12 . Although a large number of collagen types have been identified, the exact role of their structural functions in the different tissues of the body, especially in muscles, is still not well established.…”
