Cognitive Styles, Gender, and Student Academic Performance in Engineering Education

Abstract: Cognitive styles affect the learning process positively if tasks are matched to the cognitive style of learners. This effect becomes more pronounced in complex education, such as in engineering. We attempted to critically assess the effect of cognitive styles and gender on students’ academic performance in eight engineering majors to understand whether a cognitive style preference is associated with certain majors. We used the Cognitive Style Indicator (CoSI) with a sample of n = 584 engineering students. Mult… Show more

“…Building on the literature review that illustrated various active learning practices and their effect on the quality of learning and satisfaction of the students, this study used mixed qualitative and quantitative methods to achieve the goal through a case study and survey (Creswell, 2014). Several proceeding studies used similar empirical methods (Al Maani, 2022;Alalouch, 2021;Mushtaha et al, 2022). Alalouch's study (2021), for instance, used a selfreporting survey of a 5-point agreement scale based on Cools and Broeck (2007) to investigate cognitive styles, gender and student academic performance in engineering education in the College of Engineering, Sultan Qaboos University.…”

“…Learners need to recognize the learning strategies and their strengths and, therefore, develop their learning capacity, also, they can take advantage of learning styles by coordinating learning strategies with them. When teaching tasks are aligned with learners' cognitive styles, their learning capabilities will be enhanced [2]. This is a form of engineering education.…”

“…This is not to be confused with cognitive styles, which refer to individual processing differences that are inextricably linked to a person's cognitive system (Peterson et al, 2009). Cognitive styles, in contrast to learning styles, are relatively fixed, stable and may even be innate preferences (Alalouch, 2021;Peterson et al, 2009).…”
