Cognitive style and social behavior in young Mexican American children

Abstract

The relationship between 76 five-year-old Mexican American children's cognitive style and their sociability was explored in five kindergarten public school classrooms. The children's cognitive style, social competence, sociometric status, social role taking and social problem solving and social play were assessed. Main effects were found in the children's play behaviors, selection of play areas, perspective taking, social competence and sociometric nominations.L'auteur a explore la relation entre les styles cognitifs et la sociabilite chez 76 enfants Mexicain-Americains de cinq ans dans cinq matemelles publiques. L'evaluation porta sur Ie style cognitif, la competence sociale, le niveau sociornetrique, Ie role social assume, la resolution de conflit social et le jeu social. Des effets principaux ont ete trouves dans le comportement de jeu des enfants, dans la selection de secteurs de jeu, dans la prise de perspective, dans la competence sociaIe et dans la nomination sociometrique.Se explor6 la relaci6n entre los estilos cognitivos y la sociabilidad de 76 nines Mexicano Americanos de cinco anos de edad en cinco jardines infantiles publicos.Se evalu6 el estilo cognitivo, la competencia social, el nivel socionetrico. la parte asumida en la sociedad, la resolucion de contlicto social y el juego social. Se encontraron efectos irnportantes en la conducta de juego en los ninos, en la seleccion de mas de juego, en la toma de perspectivas, en la competencia social y en la nominaci6n sociornetrica.

Neural correlates of prosocial behavior in infancy: Different neurophysiological mechanisms support the emergence of helping and comforting

The above mentioned interpretation that instrumental helping relies on task-related decision making processes could also offer an explanation of the negative correlation between infants' understanding of others' distress and instrumental helping behavior as it has been suggested that task-orientation and social orientation form two different orientations of the same personality dimension (Nakamura and Fink, 1980;Saracho, 1991).
