Many factors influence the creation of business process models which are understandable for a target audience. Understandability of process models becomes more critical when size and complexity of the models increase. Using vertical modularization to decompose such models hierarchically into modules is considered to improve their understandability. To investigate this assumption, two experiments were conducted. The experiments involved 2 large-scale real-life business process models that were modeled using BPMN v2.0 (Business Process Model and Notation) in the form of collaboration diagrams. Each process was modeled in 3 modularity forms: fully-flattened, flattened where activities are clustered using BPMN groups, and modularized using separately viewed BPMN sub-processes. The objective was to investigate if and how different forms of modularity representation (used for vertical modularization) in BPMN collaboration diagrams influence the understandability of process models. In addition to the forms of modularity representation, the presentation medium (paper vs. computer) and model reader's level of business process modeling competency were investigated as factors that potentially influence model comprehension. 60 business practitioners from a large organization and 140 graduate students participated in our experiments. The results indicate that, when these three modularity representations are considered, it is best to present the model in a 'flattened' form (with or without the use of groups) and in the 'paper' format in order to optimally understand a BPMN model. The results also show that the model reader's business process modeling competency is an important factor of process model comprehension.

Digitization is advancing rapidly in many prevalently analogue domains such as healthcare. For the latter domain, the synergies with modern information technologies (IT) have become an integral part regarding communication and collaboration. For this reason, a comprehensible language is of importance in order to allow a frictionless exchange of information between domain experts. The Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) 2.0 represents a promising notation that may be applied as lingua franca. Although the BPMN 2.0 is widespread applied by experts in business and industry, little experience exists how BPMN 2.0 is adopted in healthcare. In order to assess how BPMN 2.0 is deployed in healthcare, we conducted a preliminary eye tracking study, in which n = 16 professionals from healthcare comprehended a particular BPMN 2.0 process model. The results indicate that BPMN 2.0 might be a candidate for a lingua franca to foster the comprehensible exchange of information as well as collaboration between healthcare and IT.

The continual digital transformation in various domains yielded promising opportunities, especially in the healthcare industry. Thereby, a seamless integration of healthcare expertise with information technology (IT) is essential to benefit further from the potentials of digitization (e.g., generate new communication and collaboration synergies). A lingua franca (i.e., a common language that enables understandable information interchange between healthcare practitioners and IT) is vital to this endeavor. The Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) 2.0 is a promising option for such a lingua franca, according to earlier studies. In order to assess BPMN 2.0's potential as a lingua franca, a cross-sectional follow-up study with N = 31 participants was carried out on this foundation. Two process models for dental appointment and vaccination were explained to the participants. Their cognitive load, skin conductivity (i.e., electrodermal activity), and gaze movements (i.e., eye tracking) were all monitored simultaneously. The examined performance indicators reinforce previous conclusions, showing that it is feasible to adequately understand process model semantics, which confirms the effectiveness of BPMN 2.0 as a universal language. However, the significant focus should be on minimizing the inherent complexity of process model syntactics and pragmatics. The outcomes additionally demonstrated the potential for assessing eye tracking and electrodermal activity in this context.
