Cognitive reserve and resilience: Possible mechanisms of dementia prevention

Abstract: Background Predictions about future dementia prevalence vary but usually suggest large increases in numbers of people with dementia as the population ages. However, in some countries, for example, the US, UK and Netherlands, while overall numbers of people with dementia are growing as predicted, the age‐specific incidence rates of dementia have decreased substantially. This is probably due to educational, socio‐economic, health and lifestyle changes. Method We reviewed known risk factors listed in the 2017 Lan… Show more

“…In Taiwan, a region with a contrasting cultural landscape, different values again are reported. [11][12][13] Similarly, although some of the risk factors identified in international studies [14][15][16] are also found in the Guangdong region, 17 no study has yet compared the risk factors in the GBA to other provinces in Mainland China directly, despite differences in health care, languages, literacy, income and lifestyle eg rural v urban populations. Multilingualism, multi-literacy and levels of education are relatively high in the GBA compared to Mainland China.…”

“…CR refers to the efficiency, capacity and flexibility of cognitive processes that explain differential of brain damage in cognitive performance and day-to-day functioning ( Stern, 2009 ). It is an active model of resilience influenced by different exposures across the lifespan, including but not limited to early general cognitive ability (intelligence), formal education, occupation, physical exercise, leisure activities and social participation ( Livingston et al, 2020 ; Stern et al, 2020 ). Several published studies suggest a potential protective role of cognitive reserve factors against the onset and worsening of frailty among older adults, keeping their cognitive abilities at older ages ( Staff et al, 2004 ).…”
