Currently, there are several ongoing efforts for the definition of new regulation policies, paradigms, and technologies aiming a more efficient usage of the radio spectrum. In this context, cognitive radio (CR) emerges as one of the most promising players by enabling the dynamic access to vacant frequency bands on a non-interference basis. However, the intrinsic characteristic of CR opens new ways for attackers, namely in the context of the effective detection of incumbent or primary users (PUs), the most fundamental and challenging requirement for the successful operation of CR networks. In this article, we provide a global and integrated vision of the main threats affecting CR environments in the context of the detection of primary users, with a particular focus on spectrum sensing data falsification and primary user emulation attacks. We also address solutions and research challenges still required to address such threats. Our discussion aims at being complete and self-contained, while also targeting readers with no specific background on this important topic of CR environments. It is, as far as our knowledge goes, the first work providing a global and clear vision of security threats and countermeasures in the context of primary user detection in CR.

Cognitive Radio (CR) is considered an intelligent technology. It improves the utilization of the radio spectrum. The increasing number of new devices has resulted in growing congestion of the ISM bands. FCC issued an order only permitting unlicensed users (secondary users) to operate in white space without interfering with licensed users (primary users). Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) provides a solution to the problem of additional spectrum requirements by utilizing the spectrum more efficiently. CR is able to sense the spectrum and share the spectrum with unlicensed users. There are number of popular spectrum sensing techniques in CR such as cyclostationary feature detection, energy detection and matched filter detection, which capture the best available spectrum. They use a spectrum dynamically in wireless communication network. A CR with multicarrier technique (OFDM and FBMC) are the next generation of advanced cellular network, which would provide better spectrum utilization and therefore have greater capacity. In this study we have described and reviewed CR technology and its numerous features that may play a very essential role in the field of next generation wireless communication networks.

This paper proposes the revamp of architecture of an eNodeB (eNB) for 5G cellular communication networks capable of opening up the crunched spectrum resources. We have developed a novel priority driven Resource Block (RB) handoff algorithm for Full-Duplex Multi-User MIMO communication, where the eNB creates beams for establishing communication links. The use of Full-Duplex operation enables simultaneous in-band uplink and downlink operation without sacrificing temporal resource in each link. Space-division multiple access (SDMA) technique has been used to dynamically create a beam towards the intended mobile users as well as track them through beam steering. The possibility of co-channel interference (CCI) due to mobility of users is eliminated by the introduction of RB handoff mechanism. This allows sharing of a RB or RBs by multiple users. In the proposed architecture, along with coexistence of multiple mobile UEs in same RBs diversity gain is introduced both in uplink and downlink. The work includes related simulations showing the conceptual validity of the proposed architecture to revamp. The proposed eNB model leads to improved QoS and a significant decrease in cellular spectrum requirement worth millions of dollars.
