This chapter discusses assessment of second language (L2) pragmatics. It outlines the construct of L2 pragmatic knowledge, discusses previous test development projects, and critically examines them in terms of content coverage. It argues for testing a broader construct of interlanguage pragmatics beyond speech acts, implicature, and routine formulas. It also discusses elicitation instruments like discourse completion tests (DCTs), role plays, and multiple choice tests. Finally, it outlines challenges for future test development, including problems of test practicality, the co‐construction of interaction, the effect of the test situation on performance, and the representativeness of social situations covered in the test.
