‘Coexisting pituitary adenoma and suprasellar meningioma—a coincidence or causation effect: report of two cases and review of the literature’

Abstract: Coexistence of pituitary adenoma (PA) and another type of brain tumor is a very rare clinical scenario. Even though such a presentation can be an incidental event but a thorough review of the literature will be made to elucidate the possible mechanisms and treatment options in similar cases. Two cases of concomitant sellar and suprasellar/diaphragmatic tumors are reported. A 37-year-old lady with prolactinoma and a suprasellar diaphragmatic meningioma and a 42-year-old acromegalic man with suprasellar/diaphrag… Show more

“…In our literature search we found a total of 49 patients with both a meningioma and a pituitary tumour without a history of irradiation. A preference for parasellar localization was found with 22 cases, [4][5][6]10,13,14,16,22,[25][26][27]29,31,[33][34][35][36][38][39][40] of which in 13 cases the tumours were contigious. 6,10,14,22,26,27,31,33,35,[38][39][40] In only three a distinction had been made between the tumours preoperatively.…”

“…34 In literature we indeed see a higher proportion of GH-producing adenomas with concomitant meningioma (30.6%). 4,5,[9][10][11]17,20,21,24,29,30,32,35,40 The mechanism through which the GH-adenomas would possibly influence the meningiomas is unclear, but 75% of meningiomas do express GH and IGF-I receptors. 41 Until now no overlapping genetic factors have been discovered in pituitary adenomas and meningiomas.…”

“…In addition, hyperprolactinemia has been documented in the same patients, suggesting prolactin has a role as a tumor growth factor. Interestingly, several reports have been published on the co‐occurrence of pituitary prolactinoma and other sellar tumors, such as meningioma, gangliocytoma or fibrosarcoma . Transdifferentiation from neoplastic cells of pituitary adenoma has been claimed as a possible pathogenetic mechanism in these cases .…”

“…Last, two patients with acromegaly were described by Zhao et al and their histopathological reports displayed collision tumors with GH-secreting pituitary adenomas and sella meningiomas [8]. On the other hand, plenty of case reports described various coexistent pituitary adenoma and isolated suprasellar meningioma [33][34][35][36][37][38]. At this point, the difference between "coexistent/concomitant" and "collision" should be underlined.…”
