Unexpected concomitant pituitary adenoma and suprasellar meningioma: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: We report a case of a 75-year-old patient with hypopituitarism, bitemporal visual field deficits and a parasellar mass on pituitary MRI. During surgery, suspicion was raised that a non-functioning pituitary adenoma was accompanied by an abutting diaphragm sellae meningioma, which was confirmed at pathological examination. In retrospect, the initial MRI suggested two separate tumours on the basis of differing densities but this distinction was not seen on the last preoperative MRI.

“…Simultaneous occurrence of pituitary adenoma and meningioma without a history of radiotherapy is a rare condition clinically, having only been described in 49 cases before 2019, 9 while ACTH-secreting pituitary adenomas (CD) comorbid with meningioma have been reported even less frequently. In the reported cases, the most common site of meningioma is parasellar, accounting for 44.9%, while meningioma located in the distant part of the adenoma is rare.…”

“…[ 1 - 3 , 5 , 6 , 8 , 9 , 13 - 15 ] However, a thorough review of the literature reveals that in most of the cases described in these reports/series, there is a preponderance of sellar/parasellar meningiomas. [ 2 , 5 , 8 ] There are only a few cases of coexisting PA and meningioma, in which the meningioma was located far away from the adenoma. [ 3 , 6 , 9 , 13 - 15 ] Table 1 summarizes these cases.…”
