Coexistence Analysis and Cognitive Opportunities Selection in GSM Bands

Abstract: This paper presents a characterization of spectrum opportunities in GSM900 downlink bands, for fixed and mobile scenarios. A testbed to analyze coexistence between the licensed GSM900 downlink system and an OFDM based secondary system that opportunistically shares the same spectrum is presented. Coexistence analysis is based on metrics such as spectrum collisions rate and the secondary system throughput. Using this testbed a cognitive mechanism to classify and select stable opportunities is evaluated in realis… Show more

“…The measurements are described in the Portuguese frequency allocation context. This work complements the one presented in [1] which presents the period of time of opportunities distribution for a GSM900 band in a mobile situation. This work goes beyond other spectrum occupational articles [2]- [6] in the way that it tries to model the spectrum occupancy.…”

“…For our approach we have chosen energy detection based on periodogram computation, since it is a low complex method that can be easily implemented on SDR systems, and has been reported previously to effectively sense GSM spectrum [31]. …”
