Coded Bi-directional Relaying

Abstract: -In this summary, we consider bi-directional communication between a transmitter and receiver communicating via a relay station. We present a novel communication method based on joint data packet encoding in conjunction with exploitation of a priori known information that enables reduced number of transmissions, whereby enhancing aggregate throughput.

“…Recently, it has been applied to improve the transmission efficiency of two-way relay networks (TWRNs) [4], [5]. In [6], [7], a three time slot (TS) NC scheme based on decode-and-forward (DF) protocol was first introduced to TWRNs. By allowing two sources to transmit simultaneously to the relay, a two TS analog network coding (ANC) scheme with amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol [8], [9] and a two TS physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme using estimated-and-forward (EF) protocol [10], [11] were proposed for TWRNs.…”

“…Network coding is emerged as a promising solution to achieve higher bandwidth efficiency in both wired [1][2][3] and wireless networks [4][5][6] . Especially in wireless network, a network-coded bi-directional relaying (NCBR) has been proposed to improve system throughput [5] .…”

“…Especially in wireless network, a network-coded bi-directional relaying (NCBR) has been proposed to improve system throughput [5] . The key features of NCBR are that packets from the mobile station (MS) and base station (BS) are jointly encoded through bit-wise network coding, e.g., XOR, and then the composite packet is broadcasted back to each station.…”

“…In 3P-TWR, two source nodes send information to the relays successively over the first two phases, and the relays broadcast a mixture of the received signal during the third Broadcasting (BC) phase. The 3P-DF-TWR is first proposed in [6] for the single-relay case, where the relays perform Network Coding (NC) [7] at bit-level through exclusive-or operations. NC is power efficient in that the relays only need to send a single symbol, based on which both sources can uniquely decode the information from the other end by use of its own side information.…”
