The objective of this research is to know the most occurrence types of code used in the novel and the purposes that contribute to those occurrences. The data were derived from qualitative technique using a novel as the material. The data were analyzed using manual coding and descriptive qualitative. The result of this research showed that code-switching is the most code used rather than code-mixing. The total of the utterances that used code-switching is 53 in total. Meanwhile, the most type of code-switching that used in the novel is intra-sentential which has 27 in total. There were some purposes that contributed to those occurrences, namely, quoting somebody else, express solidarity, and express disapproval. In the novel, switching a code is used to quote a famous expression, proverb, or writing some well-known figures. Also, it is used to express solidarity, to show the bonding between characters. A status relationship between people may be relevant in choosing the appropriate code. Additionally, express disapproval also can contribute to the occurrence in the novel, to express anger or unpleasant events. Therefore, the three factors are contributed to the occurrence of code-switching in the novel.

Code-switching has become a common language phenomenon that is widely used by each speaker who perceives and practices two or more languages in their daily lives. This common language phenomenon is looked up upon as the exchange of languages into other languages by speakers. This research aimed to discover the use of code-switching and the communicative functions of French as the second language used in an English novel entitled Petite Anglaise written by Catherine Sanderson. Moreover, this research involved analyzing the use of code-switching between English and French from all of the 34 chapters contained in the novel. The researchers have chosen the theoretical framework pioneered by Poplack (1980) to identify the three types of code-switching, namely tag code-switching, intrasentential code-switching and intersentential code-switching. Besides, this research also demonstrates the communicative functions of language, especially French, based on the theoretical framework presented by Halliday (1973). The findings show that each French word that was part of the code-switching phenomenon used by the author has the language communicative functions. Furthermore, based on the data analysis, each of the French words has played an important role to facilitate the author's messages through the dialogues of every character involved. The results of this research are also expected to benefit readers especially for those who are interested in French languages. This is because this research demonstrates the ability of codeswitching to assist in the acquisition of the foreign language even though through non-academic materials including the novel.

There are numerous languages available around the world. The Indonesian language and English are just two of the many languages spoken around the globe. Aside from that, there are numerous regional languages spoken on Indonesia's various islands. As a result, Indonesians tend to move from Indonesian to their regional language (mother tongue). Furthermore, Jakartan youths frequently transfer from Indonesian to English and vice versa. The goal of this paper is to look into the code-switching that occurs among Jakartan youths. Many people transition their language from their mother tongue to their second language unknowingly. Similarly, some Jakartan teens discovered that their first language (Indonesian) was being replaced by their second language (English). This study was part of a qualitative research project that used a case study approach. To collect the necessary data, this study used observations and interviews as tools. When having a conversation with someone, the participants engage code-switching, according to the findings of this study. This is because speaking makes them feel more at ease and confident. When a person is fluent in more than one language, this is referred to as bilingualism or multilingualism.
