Coastal flooding in Scituate (MA): A FVCOM study of the 27 December 2010 nor'easter

Abstract: [1] A nested Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) inundation forecast model has been developed for Scituate (MA) as part of the Northeast Coastal Ocean Forecast System (NECOFS). Scituate Harbor is a small coastal lagoon oriented north-south with a narrow entrance (with opposing breakwaters) opening eastward onto Massachusetts Bay and the Gulf of Maine. On 27 December 2010, a classic nor'easter produced a 0.9 m high surge, which when added to the 1.5 m high tide and seasonal higher mean water level, produc… Show more

“…The FVCOM was widely used to study the hydrodynamic and transport process in aquatic areas such as lakes, estuaries and oceans [11][12][13][14] . It was applied in shallow waters, like Lake Taihu in China to study the surface mixed layer depth [15] , and also Lake El-Manzala in Egypt for salinity distribution and water management [16] .…”

“…The Gulf model was developed using unstructured grid Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) (Chen et al 2003). With the merit of an unstructured grid for ideal geometrical fitting Tian and Chen 2006;Xue et al 2009), FVCOM has gained its popularity in research and applications to estuaries and coastal oceans (Weisberg and Zheng 2006;Chen et al 2008;Cowles et al 2008;Zhao et al 2010;Xue et al 2011;Beardsley et al 2013;Chen et al 2014). The horizontal resolution of the model grid varies from ;3 km near the coast to ;5 km in the offshore region of the Gulf and gradually decreases to 10-15 km close to the open boundary (Fig.…”

“…Some of the wave processes that impact the coastal environment are as follows: (i) wave set-up during cyclones, which contributes significantly to storm surge and inundation; for example, when waves were included in the model, Beardsley et al (2013) found that more areas were influenced by flooding in the Massachusetts Bay. (ii) Wave-current interaction increases the bottom friction, thereby increasing the bottom stress.…”
