This study identifies hydrogeologic characteristics of complex aquifers based on constructing stratigraphic structure with large, non-uniform well log data. The approach was validated through a modeling study of the irrigation-intensive Chicot aquifer system, which is an important Pleistocene-Holocene aquifer of the Coastal Lowlands aquifer system in the southwestern Louisiana. Various well log types were unified into the same data structure, prioritized based on data sources, and interpolated to generate a detailed stratigraphic structure. More than 29,000 well logs were integrated to construct a stratigraphy model of 56 model layers for the Chicot aquifer system. The stratigraphy model revealed interconnections of various sands in the system, where 90% of the model domain is covered by fine-grained sediments. Although the groundwater model estimated a slight groundwater storage gain during 2005–2014 for the entire region, groundwater storage in the agricultural area was depleted. Nevertheless, the quick groundwater storage recovery during the non-irrigation seasons suggests that the Chicot aquifer system is a prolific aquifer system. The groundwater modeling result shows that the gulfward groundwater flow direction prior to pumping has been reversed toward inland pumping areas. The large upward vertical flow from the deeper sands indicates potential saltwater migration from the base of the Chicot aquifer system.

Efficient Stochastic Simulation of Seawater Intrusion, With Mixing, in Confined Coastal Aquifers

We present a high-efficiency method for simulating seawater intrusion (SWI), with mixing, in confined coastal aquifers based on uncoupled equations in the through-flow region of the aquifer. The flow field is calculated analytically and the tracer transport numerically, via spatial splitting along the principal directions (PD) of transport. Advection-dispersion processes along streamlines are simulated with the very efficient matched artificial dispersivity (MAD) method of Syriopoulou and Koussis and the system of discretized transverse-dispersion equations is solved with the Thomas algorithm. These concepts are embedded in the 2D-MADPD-SWI model, yielding comparable solutions to those of the uncoupled SWI equations with the state-of-the-art FEFLOW code, but faster, while 2D-MADPD-SWI achieves an at least hundredfold faster solution than a variable-density flow model. We demonstrate the utility of the 2D-MADPD-SWI model in stochastic Monte Carlo simulations by assessing the uncertainty on the advance of the 1,500 ppm TDS line (limit of tolerable salinity for irrigation) due to randomly variable hydraulic conductivity and freshwater flow rate.

Η ανάλυση ευαισθησίας, η ανάλυση αβεβαιότητας, η βελτιστοποίηση και άλλες επαναληπτικές μεθοδολογίες βασίζονται στην χρήση πολλαπλών προσομοιώσεων υψηλής πιστότητας, για την αποτελεσματική εφαρμογή τους σε πολύπλοκα φυσικά συστήματα. Η σύζευξη των εν λόγω μεθοδολογιών με λεπτομερή αριθμητικά μοντέλα συχνά κρίνεται ως μη πρακτική λόγω του μεγάλου υπολογιστικού φόρτου. Ένα αντίστοιχο πρόβλημα πραγματεύεται και η παρούσα διατριβή στην οποία η χρήση μοντέλων υψηλής πιστότητας για την προσομοίωση της παράκτιας υπόγειας ροής στην βελτιστοποίηση αντλήσεων, εμποδίζει την εφαρμογή καθιερωμένων σχημάτων προσομοίωσης-βελτιστοποίησης λόγω αυξημένου υπολογιστικού φόρτου. Μια διαθέσιμη μέθοδος, αναγνωρισμένη στην βιβλιογραφία για την επιτυχή μείωση του υπολογιστικού κόστους κατά την βελτιστοποίηση, είναι η χρήση μετα-μοντέλων στην οποία εστιάζει η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή. Ως κύριος στόχος της εργασίας είναι η ανάπτυξη νέων αποτελεσματικών σχημάτων προσομοίωσης-βελτιστοποίησης με χρήση μετα-μοντέλων στην διαχείριση παράκτιων υδροφορέων. Επιχειρείται επίσης μια εκτενής ανασκόπηση των μεθοδολογιών βελτιστοποίησης με χρήση μετα-μοντέλων τόσο στους διάφορους κλάδους της μηχανικής όσο και στον χώρο της διαχείρισης των υδατικών πόρων. Δίνεται έμφαση στην ανάπτυξη και ταυτόχρονα διεξοδική σύγκριση ανάλογων μεθόδων σε προβλήματα βελτιστοποίησης αντλήσεων με διαφορετική διάσταση και διαφορετικό αριθμό προϋπολογισμένων προσομοιώσεων με το υπολογιστικά απαιτητικό αριθμητικό μοντέλο παράκτιας ροής. Σημειώνεται ότι η διατριβή παρουσιάζει την αποτελεσματικότητα και τις συγκρίσεις των διαφόρων μεθοδολογιών βάσει πολλαπλών ανεξάρτητων δοκιμών βελτιστοποίησης. Αναπτύσσονται και προτείνονται τα παρακάτω σχήματα βελτιστοποίησης με μετα-μοντέλα: (α) Σχήμα βελτιστοποίησης βασισμένο σε μετα-μοντέλα, ενσωματωμένο στις διαδικασίες εξελικτικού αλγόριθμου και εφαρμογή στρατηγικής στοχευμένης εκμετάλλευσης. (β) Σχήμα βελτιστοποίησης βασισμένο σε πολλαπλά μετα-μοντέλα (επιλογή καλύτερου μετα-μοντέλου ή δημιουργία συνόλου μετα-μοντέλων με υπολογισμό βέλτιστων βαρών), ενσωματωμένο στις διαδικασίες εξελικτικού αλγόριθμου και εφαρμογή στρατηγικής στοχευμένης εκμετάλλευσης. (γ) Σχήμα αναδρομικής-προσαρμοστικής βελτιστοποίησης βασισμένο σε μετα-μοντέλα, με στρατηγική αναζήτησης ισορροπίας μεταξύ ευρείας εξερεύνησης και στοχευμένης εκμετάλλευσης. (δ) Βελτιστοποίηση βασισμένη σε μοντέλα υφαλμύρωσης πολλαπλής πιστότητας με χρήση της μεθοδολογίας co-Kriging. Με την χρήση των προτεινόμενων μεθοδολογιών προέκυψαν αξιόπιστες λύσεις στην περιοχή του ολικού βέλτιστου, ικανοποιώντας ταυτόχρονα την ανάγκη για μικρό αριθμό προσομοιώσεων με το υπολογιστικά απαιτητικό μοντέλο μεταβλητής πυκνότητας και μεταφοράς ρύπου. Η ύπαρξη πολλαπλών μη γραμμικών περιορισμών στο πρόβλημα βελτιστοποίησης αντλήσεων που εξετάζεται, αντιμετωπίστηκε επιτυχώς με τα προτεινόμενα σχήματα και την χρήση συναρτήσεων ακτινικής βάσης (RBF) ως μετα-μοντέλα. Επιπλέον οι προτεινόμενες μεθοδολογίες συγκρίνονται επαρκώς με δημοσιευμένες τεχνικές βελτιστοποίησης με χρήση μετα-μοντέλων που χαίρουν ευρείας αποδοχής στην αντίστοιχη επιστημονική περιοχή. Το καινοτόμο προτεινόμενο σχήμα βελτιστοποίησης πολλαπλής πιστότητας που αναπτύχθηκε αξιοποιώντας τις δυνατότητες της μεθοδολογίας co-Kriging, παρείχε ενθαρρυντικά αποτελέσματα για την χρήση του σε προβλήματα βελτιστοποίησης αντλήσεων παράκτιων υδροφορέων με πολύ υψηλό υπολογιστικό κόστος.
