The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the water infusion method for various coalfaces of a coal seam by an experimental study. First, laboratory tests were performed on several coal samples taken from actual coalfaces to determine the general characteristics, especially the strength properties, with respect to the moisture content and time. The results obtained from the laboratory were employed to evaluate the appropriate parameters (e.g., water injection time and the optimum moisture content) for water infusion works in the field. A field test was then performed in order to assess the efficacy of water infusion for underground mining. The spalling depth (i.e., longwall face failure of coal wall, involving the stability of underground mining coalfaces) and mining velocity (i.e., involving the cost-effectiveness of mining constructions) were monitored at various coalfaces for both case studies (i.e., with and without water infusion). Expectedly, the field test results revealed that the spalling depth decreased significantly, whereas the mining velocity sped up considerably, at coalfaces using water infusion compared to at those without using the water infusion method. In conclusion, the promising findings obtained from the field test reinforced the efficacy of water infusion for underground mining coalfaces.

Rock burst disasters can be reduced and prevented with the help of coal dust water injection. In this study, the high‐pressure water injection device is used to examine how the water absorption rate changes over time under various water injection pressures. The results reveal that the water absorption rate of coal samples increases quickly initially before slowing down with water absorption time. Its change can be described using the Langmuir equation. In addition, the Langmuir equation is utilized to demonstrate how water injection pressure affects the maximum water absorption of coal samples. The effects of experimental findings and numerical analysis are investigated on water injection pressure. The breadth and extent of coal bodies with increased moisture are continuously expanding at the same water injection pressure and water injection time. The water absorption of coal close to the borehole remains relatively unchanged with an increase in water injection pressure, but the water absorption range of coal in the vicinity increases. Therefore, raising the water injection pressure and duration will improve the effective range of water injection. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Coal dust in the coal mining process may lead to a serious threat to the safety and health of miners. The addition of surfactants during coal seam water infusion can significantly improve the effect of dust suppression, so it is crucial to study the influence mechanism of surfactants on coal wettability. The variation of the hydration film thickness on the Tunliu coal surface at different concentrations of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) solution was investigated by atomic force microscopy. The experimental results indicate that the hydration film thickness increases initially and decreases afterward with the SDBS solution concentration increase, with a maximum value of 11.4 nm. The surface free energy (SFE) of coal molecules adsorbed with different numbers of SDBS molecules were calculated using two coal molecule cell models developed by Materials studio 8.0, and the simulation results display a good agreement with the experiments. The higher the SFE, the greater the hydration film thickness on the coal surface, and the stronger the enhancement effect of SDBS solution on the wettability of coal at the corresponding concentration. The interface formation energy (IFE) and cohesive energy density (CED) of coal molecules after adsorption of SDBS molecules were calculated separately. It was found that when three SDBS molecules were adsorbed, the absolute value of IFE and CED reached the maximum, and each SDBS molecule had the strongest average effect on coal molecules, the bond between them would be tighter. SFE simulations are helpful to optimize the selection of surfactants for practical engineering applications.
