The effects of temperature and pressure on interfacial tension (IFT) of a CO2/n-pentane binary system were investigated using the pendant drop method. To ensure the accuracy and reproducibility of our results, the pendant drop method is first used to measure the IFT of fluid systems whose results are available in the literature and then the validated experimental procedure is applied to determine the IFT of the CO2/n-pentane system as functions of pressure (ranging from 0.18 to 6.07 MPa) and temperature (ranging from 296.15 to 377.55 K). Within the pressure and temperature ranges applied, IFT values varied from 0.94 to 15.2 mN/m, and it is observed that IFT decreases monotonically with isothermally increasing pressure; however, when the temperature increases isobarically, IFT decreases at low pressures but the trend reverses at higher pressures, where IFT shows greater values at higher temperatures than at lower temperatures. Modeling of the experimental IFT results using the parachor equation for the binary mixture is also discussed.

Nowadays, one of the most efficient ways of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is gas miscible injection (GMI). In GMI, minimum miscible pressure (MMP) is the most substantial parameter. The MMP can be estimated by different methods, such as laboratory methods, using the equation of states (EOS), empirical correlations, mathematical models, and artificial intelligence. Among these, laboratory methods of estimating MMP comprise slim tube displacement (STD), rising bubble apparatus (RBA), vanishing interfacial tension (VIT), X-ray computerized tomography (CT), fast fluorescence-based microfluidic (FFBM) method, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), sonic response method (SRM), rapid pressure increase (RPI), oil droplet volume measurement (ODVM), and pressure–composition diagrams (PCDs), all of which are described in detail in this paper. Furthermore, experimental investigations performed using the mentioned laboratory methods have been presented. On the other hand, to perform miscible injection experiments in the matrix–fracture system, there are methods, such as fractured core plug (FCP), matrix–fracture system (MFS), modified core holder (MCH), and microconsolidation device (MCD), that the accomplished studies by the mentioned method have surveyed. Eventually, it can be deduced that, owing to the difference between the MMP in conventional and fractured reservoirs, a reliable method (laboratory or mathematical model) for estimating the MMP in fractured reservoirs is required.

Carbon dioxide miscible flooding has become one of the important technologies for improving oil recovery. The Minimum Miscible Pressure (MMP) is the key parameter to realize miscible flooding. As the MMP in the research area is higher than the formation fracture pressure, miscible flooding cannot be formed. To address this problem, it is necessary to find a way to reduce the MMP. Citric acid isobutyl ester is chosen to reduce the MMP of carbon dioxide and crude oil in this research. The effect of citric acid isobutyl ester on reducing the MMP was measured by the method of long-slim-tube displacement experiment. The experiment results show that the MMP is 29.6 MPa and can be obviously reduced by injecting the slug of citric acid isobutyl ester. The MMP could decrease gradually with constantly adding the injected slug of citric acid isobutyl ester, but the decrease becomes smaller and smaller. The optimum injected slug size of the chemical reagent is 0.003 PV. Under the condition of the slug size, the MMP is reduced to 23.5 MPa and the reduction is 6.1 MPa.
