This work presents the results of the study of the physical, chemical, mineralogical and pozzolanic properties of the altered volcanic tuffs (AVT) that lie in the Los Frailes caldera, south of the Iberian Peninsula, and demonstrates their qualities as pozzolans for the manufacturing of mortars and pozzolanic cements of high mechanical strength. The main objective of this research is to show to what extent the AVTs can replace portland cement (PC) in mortars, with standardised proportions of 75:25% and 70:30% (PC-AVT). To achieve these objectives, three AVT samples were studied by a petrographic analysis of thin section (PATS), DRX, FRX and MEB. The pozzolanic properties were determined by three methods: electrical conductivity (ECT), chemical pozzolanicity tests (CPT) at 8 and 15 days and mechanical strength tests (MS) of the specimens at 2, 7, 28 and 90 days. Studies of a PATS, DRX, FRX and MEB showed that the AVT samples’ constitutions are complex where smectite (montmorillonite), mordenite, quartz, halloysite, illite, kaolinite, volcanic glass and lithic fragments coexist. The results of the ECT and CPT tests confirmed the pozzolanic properties of the samples analysed and proved an increase in mechanical strength from 2 to 90 days of testing.

In recent years, the use of local materials in pavements has developed to compensate for the lack of normalized standard materials in the Algerian arid regions. The main objective of this research is to assess the co-valorization of two local materials to design a road material with satisfactory characteristics. In this context, the use of tuff in combination with sand residues is explored. The evolution of the characteristics of tuffs mixed with sand residues according to percentages ranging from 0% to 50% is highlighted. The used materials were subjected to physical and mechanical tests. Then, a series of mechanical tests were carried out on mixed samples compacted at the optimal characteristics that were deduced from the modified Proctor test. The obtained results highlight the existence of an optimal formulation composed of 70% tuff and 30% sandy residues, which presented an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 5.16 MPs and a CBR index (CBRI) of 42.6 %. Moreover, the results show clearly the evolution of the measured characteristics with time (drying) and without the addition of binders. The possibility of the use of studied mixtures in pavements has been verified regarding the recommendations in use (CTTP 2001) and the Saharan Road Technique (SRT). The south region of Algeria is characterized by a wide surface, a scattered population and a very small ratio of road length per habitant. To allow the development of agricultural, industrial and touristic activities between different cities in the south of Algeria, it is necessary to maintain and to develop the road infrastructure. However the development of these infrastructures necessitates the use of huge amount of certified aggregates from quarries which is not available in the vicinity of the need. For these raisons, in the framework of sustainable development, a strategy which consists in using local materials like fine sediments (dune sand) and other types of material is engaged. The materials constituting the road layers, until today, have been limited to certain so-called noble materials (gravel, aggregates, etc.), but these are being depleted as a result of the intensive exploitation and the scarcity of quality careers. Gypso-limestone encrustation tuffs, the most used materials in pavements (base course and base course) in the Saharan areas such as southern Algeria, have shown acceptable behavior for many years until these last days, when this type of material begins to present certain limits under the effect of the intensity of the traffic. In order to promote the abundant wind sands in these regions, we are interested in developing the dune sands in the pavement as a mixture with the tuffs. The present work presents a contribution to the study of the behavior of the tuff of the Adrar region (South of Algeria) alone and mixed with the sand dunes in different formulations. The aim is to evaluate the evolution of mechanical properties including resistance to simple compression, the ability to compaction and punching (RBC). The work also discusses the influence of the addition of cement in low levels on the performance of the mixture.
