Co-Production of Renewable Hydrogen and Electricity: Technology Development and Demonstration

Abstract: Co-production of renewable hydrogen, electricity and heat (CHHP) using internal-reforming, high-temperature fuel cells offers a potentially attractive option for the hydrogen infrastructure. The multiple co-products enhance the overall value proposition and help to mitigate the stranded assets issue. High temperature fuel cell (DFC®) systems produce their own hydrogen internally using a synergistic system integration approach. When the excess hydrogen is separated, a submegawatt co-production plant (called … Show more

“…FuelCell Energy (FCE) of Danbury, Connecticut, has teamed up with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (APCI) to demonstrate renewable hydrogen production based on the FCE molten-carbonate fuel cell technology and a novel hydrogen gas clean-up system. This system, called the "DFC-H2 " system, has undergone initial testing at FCE's research laboratories and is now being readied for deployment at a landfill site at the Orange County Sanitation District in southern California (Patel et al, 2010). See Figure 16 and Figure 17.…”

“…The company believes that a novel electro-chemical hydrogen separation unit, that they are also testing, could offer up to a 50% reduction in operating cost compared to the more conventional PSA unit, while offering an overall electrical power plus hydrogen production efficiency increase to 68% from 66% (with no waste heat recovery) on a lower-heating value basis (Patel et al, 2010).…”
