Propolis has health beneficial properties attributed to its phenol composition. Although, it has low water solubility, strong taste, and aroma, limiting its application in the food industry. This study explores the stabilization of phenolic compounds from propolis extract (PE) during the production of potato and cassava starch nanoparticles (NPs) by antisolvent precipitation. Phenolic content and antioxidant capacity (ABTS and DPPH) of acidified PE obtained with different ethanol concentrations are determined. Starch NPs based on cassava and potato starch are characterized in terms of physicochemical properties, including loading efficiency, particle size distribution and surface charge, moisture content, water activity, chemical bonds, crystalline structure, thermal stability, color, and solubility in water. Fourier‐transform infrared spectra and X‐ray diffractograms reveal that the phenolic compounds of PE are stabilized with the starch NPs, in this way, at least 54.91% of phenolic compounds from PE are stabilized by the starch NPs. Starch NPs stabilizing the phenolic compounds display brown color and high solubility in hot water (90 °C). This research reports for the first‐time information regarding the stabilization of phenolic compounds from PE using starch NPs. These starch NPs have a great potential to be used in food formulations or to manufacture active food packaging.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of propolis-iron oxide nanoparticles in eliminating the T. evansi parasite and rehome stasis of deleterious iron status in experimentally infected rabbits. Twenty male rabbits were divided into equal four groups (n=5). the 1 st group as Control negative, 2 nd control positive, 3 rd trypanosomiasis and treated with propolis iron oxide nanoparticles, and 4 th trypanosomiasis and treated with diminazene,2 nd ,3 rd , and 4 th groups were inoculated with T. evansi, and were checked for the onset of parasitemia. After 15 of the onset of parasitemia 3 rd group was treated with propolis-iron-oxide nanoparticles 30 mg iron /kg BW, and 4 th group was treated with diminazene drug with a single dose 3.5 mg/kg BW. The result showed that experimentally infection with T. evansi caused a significant decrease of serum iron and ferritin and a significant increase in total iron-binding capacity and unsaturation iron-binding capacity, as well erythrocytes fragility, bilirubin totally and partially. Treatment with propolis-iron oxide nanoparticles improved iron status parameters to semi-normal values much better than diminazene drug, in addition, reduced the total bilirubin concentration and osmotic fragility of erythrocytes toward a normal state. It can be concluded that the propolis-iron oxide nanoparticles proved successfully rebalancing iron status and eliminating the parasite and making iron available.

As abelhas produzem a própolis a partir de materiais balsâmicos coletados das plantas. Trata-se de um produto natural com diversas funções dentro da colmeia. Atualmente, a ciência já comprovou várias ações biológicas desse material, tal como antioxidante. Porém, ainda há desafios no que concerne a padronização de técnicas de coleta, preparo da amostra, análises, controle de qualidade, dentre outros, dificultando o uso da própolis pela indústria. Essa revisão investigou os possíveis fatores de heterogeneidade do potencial antioxidante da própolis, considerando todo o processo de obtenção, desde origem das colmeias até formas de extração da própolis de abelha Apis mellifera. A busca desta revisão foi realizada nas seguintes bases de dados e ferramentas de busca: SciELO, Google Acadêmico, PubMed, MEDLINE, Catálogo de Dissertações e Teses da CAPES, BVS, CRD, Embase, Science Direct, Scopus e Cochrane Library. Foram incluídas publicações em português, inglês e espanhol (2011 a 2021). Foram obtidos 173 trabalhos que comprovaram importante atividade antioxidante do extrato de própolis de A. melífera. Porém, os resultados numéricos de potencial antioxidante diferiram muito entre si. Os principais fatores de heterogeneidade encontrados nas metodologias foram: local e época de coleta (sazonalidade), raça da abelha, tipo de própolis ou sua fonte botânica, e preparo do extrato (solvente, tempo e metodologia de extração).
