Co-assembling system that exhibits bright circularly polarized luminescence

Abstract: A co-assembling system composed of a nonchiral metal-free dye and chiral-molecular-assembly template can be a promising candidate for circularly-polarized luminescent materials with both a high luminescence dissymmetry factor and strong emission.

“…To achieve efficient J-aggregate formation and the desired chirality, tight packing of the assembling molecules should be balanced by some flexibility for chirality. Among the reports on the assemblies of amino acid-derived amphiphiles (in particular, glutamic acid) with a double long alkyl chain and an ionic group, [16][17][18][19]23 our work is the first to reveal the effects of the alkyl chain length, the side chain length, and the kind of the ionic group in the amino acid-derived amphiphiles on the gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition and chiral aggregation of dyes. This strategy of inducing chiral J-aggregation could be applied to other cyanine dyes except for monomethine.…”

“…This small redshift is ascribed to the embedment of Cy2 in the hydrophobic microenvironment. 17,21 Therefore, Cy2 did not form J-aggregates but was embedded in the hydrophobic cavities of the assembly. The CD signal of the Cy2-12-Or system was inverted in comparison to those of the Cy2-other amphiphile systems.…”

“…Self-organization classified as self-assembly and spatiotemporal pattern formation has been expected to be a powerful strategy to produce functional materials at low cost without complex processes. Thus far, extensive efforts have been devoted to the self-organized production of functional materials such as porous oxides, , supramolecular assemblies, , and fractal surfaces. , In some cases, such self-organized structures serve as templates for the production of materials with properties of interest and are used as optical, chemical, , sensing, , and other functional materials with slight modifications to achieve the best performance. The wide applicability of self-organization facilitates material fabrication with specific functions originating from self-organization.…”
