Cloudlet-based cyber-foraging for mobile systems in resource-constrained edge environments

Abstract: First responders and others operating in crisis environments increasingly make use of handheld devices to help with tasks such as face recognition, language translation, decision-making and mission planning. These resource-constrained edge environments are characterized by dynamic context, limited computing resources, high levels of stress, and intermittent network connectivity. Cyber-foraging is the leverage of external resourcerich surrogates to augment the capabilities of resource-limited devices. In cloudl… Show more

“…Edge computing originated from research efforts on Cloudlets, which propose to deploy a specific infrastructure at the edge of mobile networks to support dynamic application deployment in the immediate proximity of the end users [15], [16]. The outcome of this work is OpenStack++, an extension of the popular OpenStack cloud computing platform which includes mechanisms for application deployment in a fog computing context [13].…”

“…are reaching saturation. Many are beginning to believe that the next "jump" in network performance will emerge from new ways of organizing networks [1][2][3][4][5]. In considering new network organizations, we explore the possibility of merging wireless networking with robotics.…”
