Cloud-based Plug and Work architecture of the IIC Testbed Smart Factory Web

Abstract: The Smart Factory Web (SFW) is a platform that connects Smart Factories over a network to enable flexible sharing and management of resources, assets and inventory to maximize production and efficiency. In order to become part of the Smart Factory Web, network participants describe not only their products, but also the factory capabilities to order to improve factory-to-factory collaboration. A Smart Factory Web Portal (SFWP) enables secure data and service integration in cross-site application scenarios as we… Show more

“…There are significant technical challenges to realizing the SFW vision as sketched above. The Smart Factory Web provides an open software architecture that enables the design and set-up of sustainable and resilient industrial ecosystems [14]. As such, it claims to define a blueprint architecture to be instantiated depending on the intended purpose.…”

“…There is also a link to the IIC testbed Negotiation Automation Platform led by NEC which applies the SFW for the registration and search for suitable manufacturing resources. Details of the SFW Testbed may be found in [13,14].…”

“…However, novel approaches had to be pursued to accomplish the crucial requirements of the foreseen advanced applications, with strict time-criticality being one of them, along with high reliability, fault tolerance, and security. Furthermore, there are additional issues to consider, such as dense networks, sensors-to-cloud data exchange, seamless reconfiguration, support for a big data approach and convergence [24,25]. This requires a strict and seamless coexistence of IT and OT, that is, of best efforts and deterministic/time-critical data and protocols to the field level devices.…”

“…In the present research, a visual quality-control automation application is proposed using a camera installed over the assembly line in a smart-factory model. We used the cloud-coupler and plug-and-work techniques to create a new factory or retrofit an existing one that is available in the smart factory web to share capability information toward a new marketplace for manufacturing [12]. In the present study, we not only reduce the technical efforts but also the use of standards to define the interfaces.…”
