Clostridium difficile enteritis in a patient after total proctocolectomy

Abstract: Clostridium difficile infection is associated with antibiotic therapy and usually limited to the colonic mucosa. However, it is also a rare cause of enteritis, with only a few cases reported in the literature. In the present report, the case of a 30-year-old woman with Clostridium difficile enteritis who previously had a panproctocolectomy with end ileostomy for severe ulcerative colitis is described. “…C difficile can cause pseudomembranous colitis via a toxin‐mediated inflammatory process through production of C difficile toxin A and C difficile toxin B (1). Although believed to be limited to the colon, there is a growing body of evidence from adult studies demonstrating that C difficile can also cause small bowel enteritis, particularly in patients with a history of IBD (2–7).
