Closed Cell Aluminium Foams with Phase Change Material

Abstract: Abstract. Closed cell aluminium foam samples and panels with phase change material (PCM) infiltrated in vacuum were investigated. The utilization of PCMs in larger volumes is strongly limited because of its low thermal conductivity in liquid state. However, porous structure of aluminium foam allows to absorb or to dissipate very homogenously latent heat at almost constant temperature if PCMs with phase change at the temperature range between 4°C and 28 °C are used inside of foam. Therefore the degree of fillin… Show more

“…The difference occurs at rpm starting at 1250, PCM aluminum higher engine temperature occurs because the material properties are very good for the cooling process, with easy heat transfer and heat stored in paraffin. PCM using aluminum allows it to absorb or dissipate heat In terms of materials, aluminum has the property of releasing heat more quickly and is lighter than steel (Kovacik;et al, 2017). Decrease in temperature after using PCM in the radiator inlet is 18,7%.…”

“…The change of Rayleigh number is provided by changing of gravity value. Practically, the value of Ra = 1 refers to a case with very small values of gravity (such as a thermal storage system in space) or small cavity length which might be used for cooling of (Rubitherm, 2020), (Incropera and DeWitt, 1996)] electronic applications. Furthermore, the solution of Ra = 1 allows us to know mechanism of melting in the cavity with pure conduction heat transfer and compare with the results for high value of Raleigh number to recognize the effect of convection.…”

“…The number of studies on the heat transfer augmentation in solid/liquid phase change by using closed cell porous structure is too limited in literature. Kovacik et al (2017) The main disadvantage of a closed cell porous metal structure comparing to an open cell structure for heat transfer augmentation is that the convection effect is comparatively smaller than a porous structure with open cells, and this may cause the increase of phase change period.…”

“…There are some studies relating to the application of closed-cell porous media in literature. For instance, Kovacik et al (2017) experimentally researched the closed-cell aluminum foam samples and panels with phase change material (PCM). They developed closed-cell aluminum foam panels which can be an excellent alternative for large ceiling radiators for efficient heating or cooling of rooms using low potential energy resources.…”
