Clonal propagation and synthetic seed production from nodal segments ofCape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.), a tropical fruit plant

Abstract: IntroductionPhysalis peruviana L. is a species from the family Solanaceae and genus Physalis, commonly known as Cape gooseberry (also known as physalis, golden berry, etc.). It is an herbaceous, semishrub, perennial plant, native to tropical Peru and other warm temperate and subtropical regions throughout the world (Ramirez et al., 2013). Cape gooseberry resembles tomato in flavor and appearance, though the sour and sweet taste is richer in this tropical fruit. This plant has increasing popularity due to its n… Show more

“…Generally, sucrose is the most frequently used carbohydrate acting as a signaling molecule, osmoticum and a source of carbon and energy in culture media for following in vitro morphogenetic processes such as adventitious rooting, callus organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis (Khan et al 2015;Yücesan et al 2015). The amount of tryptophan accumulated at LOG phase was significantly higher than other growth phases during adventitious root culture (Fig.…”

“…However, in the present study, a detailed SG analysis was performed on both micropropagation-and seed-derived plants of S. rebaudiana. For micropropagation, nodal segments are highly capable of shoot induction under in vitro conditions (Sivaram and Mukundan 2003;Thiyagarajan and Venkatachalam 2012;Singh et al 2014;Yücesan et al 2015). It is also noteworthy that MS medium without any growth regulator was found to be highly practical for direct clonal propagation.…”

“…Surface sterilization of seeds and germination were performed according to a method previously published by Yücesan et al (2015). Nodal segments were used as explants from 30-day germinated seedlings for culture initiation.…”
