Clonal analysis of tumorigenesis of bovine adenovirus type 3 and isolation of a nontumorigenic variant

Abstract: SummaryThe tumorigenesis of bovine adenovirus type 3 was studied using either the wild type strain or three isolated virus clones and one experimentally induced variant, with the following results:1. The wild type strain produced non-progressive, solid or cystic tumors which induced neutralizing antibodies.2. The three cloned virus strains produced progressive, always solid tumors without the formation of neutralizing antibodies.3. The experimentally induced variant proved to be non-tumorigenic and differed in… Show more

“…It has been reported that two different pathological lesions were observed in BAV3 (WBR1)infected hamsters (4) and that BAV3 represented a heterogeneous population of virus particles with different tumorigenic potentialities (27). We observed that purified BAV3-0 complete virus induced two types of tumors in newborn hamsters: an undifferentiated, hemorrhagic, transplantable type and a differentiated, nonhemorrhagic, nontransplantable type.…”

“…The significance of this fact remains obscure. It is possible that the heterogeneity of this virus plays some role in this phenomenon (Nishibe et al, 1970) Toutefois, un certain nombre de caracteristiques histologiques donnent apenser qu'el/es pourraient etre d'origine vasculaire. Vingt et une tumeurs avaient la structure d'un hemangiopericytome malin avec des zones d'angioleiomyosarcome.…”

“…Both B3 (Darbyshire, 1966;Gilden et al, 1967;Nishibe et al, 1970) and B8 (Rondhuis, 1973) produce tumors when inoculated into newborn Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratius). No oncogenicity has been shown for Bl, B2, or B6 (Rondhuis, 1973;Panigraphy et al, 1977).…”
