Clinoptilolite‐based Conductometric Sensors for Detection of Ammonium in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract: New clinoptilolite‐based conductometric sensors were developed and optimized for selective detection of ammonium in the buffered aqueous solutions. The sensors’ selective elements were prepared by subsequent drop‐casting of zeolite and Nafion on the gold electrode surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and differential conductometry were used to investigate the sensor performance. As determined in the phosphate buffer solution, the detection limit of the sensors was 30 μM and the linear range 0–1.5 mM… Show more

“…The double layer capacitance and electrode polarization of conductometric sensors can easily distort the signals, making it difficult for the data analysis system to distinguish the analyte signals from the noise. 72 Despite some reports of breakthroughs for sensor repeatability, 73 high repeatability with a deviation of 0.5% can only be sustained for around 10 h, which cannot satisfy the requirements of days or months of continuous monitoring needed for at-field devices. Thus, the long-term repeatability of conductometric sensors will need to be enhanced in the future for real-time soil nitrogen monitoring.…”

“…Currently, the major barrier for conductometric sensors as at-field devices is their poor repeatability. “…Perera et al [102] designed a conductive sensor for the detection of biomarkers. Saiapina et al [103] used conductometric sensors for the selective detection of ammonium solutions. As per experimental results, conductometric methods are fast, inexpensive, and repeatable; however, the main drawback is non-specific measurements.…”

“…Because of the differences in measurement conditions and research tasks, such characteristics of different conductometric systems can be compared only statistically or when solving the same specific tasks. The developed here devices were applied in the biosensor measurements for detection of a wide range of analytes as demonstrated in [34][35][36][37][38].…”
