Clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of young breast cancers in Eastern Guangdong of China

Abstract: Breast cancer in young women is typically with higher proportion of adverse pathological features. Breast cancer with BRCA1 mutation is often early-onset, and is usually associated with triple negative phenotpe. In this study, we aim to analyze the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis in young breast cancer patients (≤35 years old) comparing to non-young patients (>35 years old). A total of 1913 cases of primary breast carcinoma with stage I–III were enrolled, with 283 cases diagnosed as young pat… Show more

“…Intensity of nuclear BRCA protein expression was graded as strong (Score 3), moderate (Score 2), weak (Score 1) and absent staining (Score 0). Tumor cells showing Score 0 were considered negative for BRCA expression and Score 1 and above were considered positive for BRCA expression …”

“…Compared with breast cancer in older patients, BCYW usually displays different molecular subtypes that have more aggressive biological characteristics. In addition, BCYW tends to be detected in an advanced stage and carry a poor prognosis, which suggests that the pathogenesis of the disease in young patients is different from that in older patients [16][17][18].…”

“…Age alone has been shown to be an independent risk factor for breast cancer. Breast cancer in young females is unique in the sense that breast cancer in young females is itself a poor prognosis factor because of greater incidence of advanced stage of disease at presentation with high risk of recurrence 6 . The diagnosis in young females is usually delayed because of low index of, firm breasts hindering clinical and radiological interpretation also causing missing of small breast lumps.…”

“…Majority of the patients were having locally advanced III B stage. When very young patients (≤ 30 years) from the study were compared with young patients (30-40 years), very young had advanced malignancies in 50% i.e 6. out of 12 patients in young age group were having stage III B or Stage IV disease (table-3).…”
