Clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue in different age groups

Abstract: 298 4-5%. The early detection of high malignant transformation in OPMD patients is very import. Methods: Paired oral cancer/OPMD surgical specimens were obtained. Gene analysis of exomes was done by next generation sequencing, (NGS). Results: The gene mutation rate was increased in the progression of OPMD to oral cancer. The chromosome 4 and 17 had more mutations in oral cancer specimens. Positive correlation of gene mutation and malignant transformation of OPMD was found. Conclusion: Gene mutation was increas… Show more

“…18 Although we were unable to determine smoking status of our patient population, previous reports have shown that smoking is an important prognostic factor in patients with OTSCC. 15,16 In contrast with the study by Soudry et al, which reported significantly higher percentages of advanced TNM classification among young patients with OTSCC, 17 we found that young patients had decreased metastatic lymph node disease compared to older patients. This may account for our finding of increased survival rates in younger patients.…”

“…9,14,15 An added advantage of our study is the statistical power to compute DSS in addition to OS, an important metric that has not been performed in prior studies. Younger patients were also more likely to receive multimodality therapy, a finding corroborated by Zhang et al, 16 suggesting that clinicians may be more inclined to aggressively treat OTSCC in younger patients.…”

“…Vora et al 28 Previous study has reported that younger patients with MTSCC tend to have higher recurrence rate and highest recurrence death rate. 30 However, the underlying factors that determine this difference between young and old patients are largely unknown. Therefore, more concern should be paid to the MTSCC in younger patients to understand better the possible factors behind these tumours and find better prognostic markers in this patients group.…”
