Clinicopathologic Features of Ameloblastoma in Kenya

Abstract: This study describes the clinical and pathologic features of ameloblastomas seen in the 2 main craniofacial treatment centers in Kenya in the 10-year period between January 1995 and December 2005. A total of 184 patient records were analyzed for this study. Eighty-two (44.6%) of the patients were male, and 102 (55.4%) were female with an overall age range of 10 to 80 years (mean, 30.2 years; SD, 14.1 years). There was no significant difference in gender presentation of ameloblastomas, although females presente… Show more

“…Similarly, in the study carried out by Adeline et al 15 , 68.6% of the solid ameloblastomas revealed more than one histological pattern. Nonetheless, only 16.1% and 19.7% of the solid lesions evaluated by Reichart et al 16 and Kim and Jang 14 , respectively, showed more than one histological type.…”

“…Solid ameloblastomas affect the mandible prefferably 1,2,14,15 , especially the posterior region 1,15 , with a proportion between the gnathic bones of 1:5.4 16 . Our results corroborate the fact that these lesions have a predilection for the posterior mandible.…”

“…The incidence of odontogenic tumors exhibits considerable variation in epidemiological studies carried out in different countries [5,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. Such variations may be explained by geographic, ethnic and socioeconomic factors [16] and the large number of reactive/inflammatory tumors submitted to histopathological analysis in North American countries, which does not occur in Latin American countries [11].…”

“…Studies have been published on the profile of patients with ameloblastoma and it is reported that geographic variations may exert an influence on epidemiological data regarding this tumor in different populations [5,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] ( Table 1). The aims of the present study were to perform a retrospective analysis of cases of ameloblastoma, compare the findings with those described in previous studies and outline the epidemiological profile of this type of tumor in the Brazilian population.…”
