Clinico-haematological features of dermatophilosis in indigenious breeds of cattle in Ibadan, Nigeria

Abstract: This study evaluated the clinical-hematological profiles in bovine dermatophilosis. A total of 50 dermatophilosis infected cattle were studied clinically and 50 blood samples taken from two different locations of Akinyele cattle market and Bodija Abattoir Ibadan. Hematological parameters such as PCV, Hb, RBC,WBC,Platelets, MCV, MCH, MCHC, Lymphocyte and Neutrophils were evaluated using standard procedures .The level of severity was classified based on the extent of the surface lesions and the chronicity as obs… Show more

“…No changes in blood profiles were observed in sick elephants with GI, MS, eye, or wound problems. Previous case reports also showed no changes in hematology and serum chemistries in Asian elephants with GI issues [137], MS problems [138], or abscesses [139], although they have been noted in other species: colic in horses [140], lameness in goats [141], and abscesses in rats [142]. Hematology assessments are generally lacking in reports related to eye conditions (including corneal ulcers) in Asian elephants [130,143]; in horses with simple corneal ulcers, no changes in the hematological parameters were noted [144,145].…”

“…Olaogun and Jeremiah [23] reported that, in cattle infected with dermatophilosis, the RBC counts, Hgb concentrations and Htc values decreased, while the WBC counts increased with increasing severity of the infection. Tresamol and Saseendranath [24] determined that, when compared with the control animals, cattle with dermatophilosis showed lower mean WBC and RBC counts and Hgb concentrations.…”

“…The clinical parameters evaluated include estimated life weight (kg), respiratory rate (breaths minG 1 ), rectal temperature (°C), blood pressure (mmHg), heart rate (beats minG 1 ) and pulse rate (beats minG 1 ) as previously adopted by Olaogun et al 9,10 . Weight was estimated through measurement of girth circumference and length with appropriate formula 11 .…”
